does anyone speak French?

OK...I am contemplating taking an adult ed class in it?

I have been doing adult ed in spanish...and DH has been helping me...but I would have no help in French...

how difficult is it?

I speak German and need French as well for a PhD program I want to get into...I worry that adult ed will not be enough? should I take a community college class?

Re: does anyone speak French?

Once you know Spanish, French is not TOO difficult to get through, as they are both Romance languages (based on Latin). The most difficult thing is knowing the grammatical stuff, which tends to be the same for all Romance Languages. There are crazy spelling issues, and pronunciation can be difficult, but Spanish will give you some foundation for French.

I took Latin and Spanish, and I can understand a good deal if I'm reading text in another RL.

I am going to have to read French literature, etc..I am thinking that I should take a community college class...but it is such a huge committment of time...(4 x week!!!)

I am hoping that I don't have to put off my plans for these languages...

Re: does anyone speak French?

if you already know spanish and german, french should be a breeze. i took french my senior year of college after already learning german, japanese and russian and it was super-easy for me. good luck! what kind of phd program? it sounds interesting.

oh and i don't know what you meant by adult ed, but it's probably best, if you can afford it, to take it at a community college or if you live in or around a big city see if they have some sort of french institute. i know they have one in ny, but you're from cali right? well maybe they have something similar anyway.

Je parle un peu de Francais. Je l'ai etudie dans le lycee. Je me rappelle tres peu!

(I speak a little French. I studied it in high school. I remember very little!)

Friends who speak more than one Romance language say that once you've mastered one, the rest come easy. Plus, you are an English major, aren't you? My Eng major friends had an easier time with foreign languages...I struggled with tenses just as I did in English!

Bonne chance! (Good luck!)

Re: does anyone speak French?

interesting...french institute...there may be something around here...there is a large SE Asia population...and I know France had a large influence on them...

I am doing Spanish through adult ed (8 weeks at night...at the local HS) but they are moving WAY TOO SLOW...probably b/c I know a lot just from being around DH and his family...

I am so scared to take another language though!!!

the PhD program is Modern European History...and it is contingent on me scoring in the 90th percentile on the GREs...so this could all be for nothing...although I am studying my bum off for the GRE...and still have 10 months to take it and get these languages done...to some extent...

ETA: maybe I can convince DH I need a field trip to Paris...

I studied French for 8 years, so yes I do. BUT, I already knew Spanish so it wasn't hard for me at all. I say try it.

I studied French for 6 years in junior and senior high and about all I remember are days of the week, months of the year and 'Ou est la biblioteque?' Where is the library? and I probably spelled it incorrectly!!! LOL

True, Wendy!

'Maintenant classe, nous sommes a la page vingt' (now class, we are on page twenty) sticks in my head more than anything else...

Yabbo-I've always heard that total immersion is the best way to learn a language. Sounds like a few weeks in Paris may be in order!!

Ok, I’ll be the lone voice of dissent here, but I have taken years of Spanish, so I decided to sign up for a French class for something different. It was HARD! Maybe it seemed hard because I was expecting it to be easy, or maybe I’m just dense..lol..

J'ai etude francais dans la lycee aussi. Mais je ne utilise pas francais pour un longtemps. J'aime etuder francais. Depuis trois ans, J'ai vogayer a Paris. C'est tres amusant!

I am not sure how my french is nowadays but I always loved studying foreign languages. I tried to teach myself Spanish (I do know some from it) but my cd I used is messed up, so I can't do it anymore. I use it sometimes in the library where I work in the computer lab but not as much as I would like so my Spanish is very poor.

I forgot to translate what I wrote in French. It says: I studied French in high school too. But I did not use my french for a long time. I love studying french. Three years ago, I traveled to Paris. It was fun!

I agree. I studied French in highschool and it was hard for me and I speak Spanish fluently On the other hand, my mom studied French in College and she can speak it now. So I guess it just depends on the person
