Does chocolate go bad?

By September/October I want to but my chocolate favors (so they dont melt in the heat) and put them together in the bags with the donation favor cards. My wedding isnt until May. Opinions please.

I think it depends on what kind of chocolate it is and how it is wrapped. Personally, I would advise against it. You want it to be as fresh as possible.

That's a little early. I don't know a lot about chocolate but I have had a Hershey bar or two that obviously was past it's prime.
I wouldn't do them more than 6-8 weeks in advance

My rush is I have a 14 month old. she consumes ALL of my waking hours except those from 9-11PM when I am too **** tired to do anything. I need to get things done early.

i think if you need to do it now - and you have the time to get it done - do it now and then you can always store them in an airtight place so hat theyre'as fresh as they ned to be for the wedding.

If it's candy coated...like M&M's or something similar, it will be fine. Just store it in a dark cool place (basement closet or something). If it's Hershey kisses, or something like them (bulkier with no coating) I wouldn't do it. They tend to start forming that white film after a few weeks...it's a telltale sign of old chocolate.

You can do it 1-2 months before, but DON'T refridgerate them - it will encourage the separation of the cocoa butter from the 'chocolate'

And chocolate that has that 'film' on it isn't necessarily bad - cocoa butter rises from the chocolate and creates the whitish layer - it is by no means 'bad' but it doesn't look as nice. Hershey's minis or kisses (Or other individually-wrapped chocolates) will be ok, but loose chocolate (like m&m's will not stay fresh.

Well all I have to say is that I KNOW Hershey kisses stay forever and a day if keep at room temp or cooler.

I bought mint kisses during the xmas season. I was still eating them at my desk into May.

I especially have this thing for dark chocolates. So I get Hershey mini darks and Hershey special dark kisses. I also, unfortunately have an odd gum problem that won't allow me to chew on chewy or extra sweet things too long. Dark chocolate has more cocoa then sugar so I can handle a single kiss. That being said.. I've had Kisses last me months on end .... often.

Went to hershey park, picked up a bag (or two) wrapped them up in plastic bags, wrapped those in ice and drove back to long island, they survived the trek to work and STILL lasted 4 months!

GOD BLESS HERSHEY!

Yes chocolate does go bad. 99% of food does go bad eventually. I'd wait & buy closer to May.

yes, chocolate can go bad.... it usually begins to look a little dry with white stuff that kinda coats the outside (not really white, but a lightr color of whatever the chocolate is). Can you assemble the rest of the favors & then just add the chocolate later?

If someone eats bad chocolate & is sensitive to it, they can get a pretty nasty stomach ache.

I would wait, too.

I make chocolate candies for every holiday & in HS worked in a chocolate shoppe. Unfortunately chocolate will get that white coating after about a month. I sometimes keep extra chocolate in the fridge, but I really wouldn't push it for more than a month, max.

Why don't you recruit the help of your bridal party to help in making the favors? Or help with babysitting duties.

Don't be afraid to ask....you're the bride....
