We just got a letter from our church with all the fees for everything. It's $150 for the organist and $150 for the singer which is fine... except it also says, 'Should you engage a private organist or soloist, the noted fees are also due to our church organist and soloist.'
What kind of racket do they have going on there? Maybe I should become an organist and get paid for doing nothing too.
Does every church do this or am I a lucky one?

That's crazy!!! My church has a set 'donation' amount of I think $650 and in the back of my packet it shows the break down of where all the money goes towards. $100 goes to the vocalist and $100 to the organist. I was planning on using them so, I am not sure if I would still have to pay if I did not.

I don't know I haven't got a letter let, but I know the 'donation' is $400 so I don't know if that includes the music...... But my mom told me we have to tip them and the alter boy??? Do we???

yes...we have to make a 500 'donation' plus 150 for the organist/music coordinater and put 150 as a deposit and if we are running late, they keep the extra 150....its bs.

I don't know about tipping them... it says to make the check that goes to the singer and organist out to cash so they probably get to keep all that money, I don't know if you have to tip on top of that. (Hahha I can see myself in my dress climbing up to the loft where they both sit with a tip envelope! )
The letter also says 'You may present a stipend to each alter server,' so I know they get tips.

Re: Does everyone's church do this?
I paid the 600.00 fee to the church and its says that includes their organist musician, however if I choose to use some one else for music they still keep the music fee.
I also like how they call it a DONATION.

My church does not do this. You only pay for the organist and singer if you use them.
