Does father give speech at wedding?

Does the father of the bride usually give a short speech at the reception? My husband didn't know if it was appropriate. We haven't been to a wedding in a while. Thanks.

We decided not to have any speeches or toasts at our wedding due to 'unpredictable' family members...haha...but we wanted my Dad to have a moment, so we asked him to lead the blessing/prayer before dinner..it was a nice way to honor him and he did a great job...HTH!

I have also been to weddings where the Dad gets up and makes a speech...it's your day...do whatever YOU feel is appropriate!

Sometimes the father does...I've seen both. English isn't my dad's best language so he will not be doing one.

I think it's whatever you want. I've also seen dads give speeches at rehearsal dinners. I agree it's your day so whatever you want works.

Both of our fathers gave speeches. DH's dad basically said that he hopes the DH will be a better husband than he is. My dad had me bawling my eyes out because he was crying too. I can't even watch it on my wedding video because I'll start crying all over again.

Not only did our fathers give speeches, our mothers, DH's 2 grandmothers, matron of honor and best man also gave speeches as well. DH's family is big on speeches.

my dad gave a short one at my sisters wedding. I think its nice for them to give one if they are the ones hosting the wedding.

Usually yes.... traditionally, the father 'gives his daughter away', so it more than appropriate. Also, IMO, it should definitely be done if the bride's parents are hosting.

I have seen so many different ways so it is completely up to you and FH.

My dad at one of my sister's weddings but that was because it was down south so he took a moment to thank everyone for traveling such a long distance. My BIL's father gave one too but he was the BM (very common in the south).

He didn't do it at my other sister's wedding and probably won't at mine either.

FFIL will probably say a blessing at the RD.
