No.

I think FH paid 100 something for the appraisal.

Thank you! My aunt told me they would have to remove my stone and I really don't want to do that!

They don't HAVE to, but without removing the stone, you'll get an approximation of weight and some other specs. If the stone was loose, the specs would be exact.

No the jeweler doesn't have to remove your stone to appraise it. I got mine done at the 34th Street Macy's and the cost was 1% of the appraisal value.

Without seeing my ring, I was quoted $180, I thought that was kind of high.

I didn't realize it cost that much.

Well, FH bought the stone loose and has specs on it from the jeweler, but for insurance we would need an appraisal from another jeweler. I just don't feel comfortable having it taken out and put back.

I had my ring appraised for insurance purposes adn it was appraised by the same jewler who sold us the ring for free. Why do you have to get it appraised by someone other than the jewler you bought it from?

If you go to someone who has a lot of experience and is properly trained, they shouldn't have to remove the stone.

My guy didn;t remove the stone and he was pretty dead on with the specs... and my appraisal cost about 150.

Mine too. Some insurance companies require an independent appraisal.

because an independent appraiser will be unbiased when appraising your ring as opposed to your jeweler or someone they recommend.

The jewelry judge is an independent appraiser. They are located in Mineola
