Does this sound crazy???

I really want to surprise my FI with a grooms cake at the rehearsal dinner, but money is so tight right now, I don't think I could pull off ordering one if I tried! So now, I'm considering making him a cake myself. Does that seem crazy? For the entire week before the wedding, I will be staying at a house in the hamptons that my family has rented, so it will have a full kitchen. Plus, it's also the location of the rehearsal dinner. I was originally thinking of having the cake be related to one of these of FI's favorite things: tequila, the Jets, Sierra Nevada beer, or Dave Matthews Band (DMB). I came across this firedancer logo from DMB. I figured I could just make a round cake, and then use this pattern to decorate it. What do you think??? Also, any insight into baking? I haven't done it much, though I'm not imcompetent at baking/cooking. Thanks ladies!

Personally, I LOVE cakes from a box - Betty Crocker, Dunkin Hines, etc..., and they are really easy to make. I think you could go with one of those and then work on creating that pattern on the top of the cake. I think that would be totally fine!

since you're doing a fire dancer on top, why not try a red velvet cake- white icing with red cake inside-very dramatic and super easy.

check out foodtv.com for recipes too- they are doing the Wedding weekend too this weekend. perhaps they will have something.

What a great idea to make it yourself! Will you have the time to do it? I think you can put the picture on top and just be creative with the icing as a border. That is how the bakeries do it (just don't eat the picture)

I think it is an EXCELLENT idea! Even if it isn't absolutely perfect (since most of us aren't professional bakers), it will mean so much more b/c you made it for him! It's Great!

Thanks everyone! My FI is a Food Network addict, so I've seen a lot of the shows myself. I think my general plan is to make a big copy of the picture, and do this thing where they put wax paper over top, then I can trace the outline with chocolate that will harden up. Once it's hard, I should hopefully be able to peel the wax paper from the design, put it on the top of the cake, and then fill it in with the crazy blues and oranges that the firedancer logo usually sports. I hope I can pull it off!
