My uncle had 2, I don't know all that much, but I lived with them for a short while...

Re: Dog ??? - Newfoundlands
Do you recall if they drooled A LOT? Was it constant?
I'm in the process of trying to sell DH on getting one.

We didn't have one but our next door neighbor did and yes they do drool a lot. I had always wanted one and that is what stopped me. Otherwise they are wonderful wonderful dogs. Mushy and loving and gentle.

Newfies definately can drool A LOT! FI deals with them, and he says they are SOOOOOO SWEET...so you actually don't mind the drool, seriously!

I don't mind the drool one bit. It's my DH that is hesitant of getting one because of that, but I think I can convince him anyway.
I've been wanting one for 4 years and I'd like to get one before we have children. DH think's I'm crazy since we already have 2 decent size dogs as it is. He thinks it will be chaos, but I think it will be worth it.
Kathy, does your FH know of any Newfy rescue organizations on Long Island? The closest organization I have found is out of Bear Mountain, NY.

My family had a Newfie! I'd get another one in a heartbeat. She was the sweetest pooch in the world!!
Yes, they drool. And shed! You'll need to put in some effort into grooming otherwise the undercoat gets matted.
Our baby was 175 lb of pure love! She was great with the kids in the family-protective, patient, never ever aggressive. While you do need to walk/run them, they don't need as much exercise as other breeds. She wasn't much of a barker-I think she believed her size was intimidating enough to a stranger. They are water rescue dogs by nature, so she loved to swim.
We bought ours from a breeder. She was 'on sale' because some of her marking made her unfit for show.
HTH. Let me know if any questions!!
Good luck convincing hubby!!!!!
ETA-the drool wasn't constant...when she was hot or after exercise, it was worse. Oh, and stand back after a drink from the water bowl!! Definitely not like the Turner and Hooch dog!!

Drool yes! Those dogs are monsters they are so big but they are soooo loveable but I am sure a lot of work. Even the transport of them to the vet is probably pure hell!!! Good Luck!

We have 2 labs, so I'm sure they'd keep the dog busy! We have a fenced in acre, so there's no shortage of room to run/walk and DH and I take the dogs for walks around the block and to the dog park.

Since we have the 2 labs and they LOVE the water, I definitely want another water dog.
DH and I joke that when we put a pool in, we'll definitely need a gunite and 3 filters!

How did the Newfy hold up in the warmer weather? We have central ac, so I'm assuming that shouldn't really be a problem.

They remind me of a big furry lab!!!!
I would imagine we wouldn't be able to lift the Newf into our SUV, but we can always purchase one of those ramps. I've also seen a step that hooks into the hitch.

Re: Dog ??? - Newfoundlands
I don't remember any hot weather issues with our Newfie. We were a very pooch-oriented family, so if it was very hot we'd just leave a ceiling fan or AC on for her.
She used to swim in our above ground pool with us! We had a patio deck around the pool (just outside the back door). Dad built a platform-like ladder contraption so that she could easily get in the pool.
I'm trying to think of any down sides to getting a Newfie...I guess the most negative thing I can think of is that they generally don't live long (like many large breeds). Ours lived to be 9 years old.
