Dog Question

My friend is having a hard time with her 1 year old daschund (sp?). He is biting up her furniture and she doesn't know what to do! I have had 3 dogs and never had this problem so i don't know what to tell her

Advice anyone???

Re: Dog Question

he is still technically a baby... so I guess what I do with mine is every time she bites something bad I say 'no' firmly and then give her something she CAN chew on... and she cannot be left unsupervised.. you can't yell at a dog for doing something wrong that you didn't catch them doing- they just do not understand.

Re: Dog Question

I know that they have something called 'bitter apple' in the pet stores that I've heard works, if you spray it on the furniture (or anything else) the taste is so bitter that the dog won't chew it anymore. Wish your friend luck!

Re: Dog Question

Bitter apple should work but my dog liked the taste so that didn't work. I am just firm with my dog and give her a chew toy in place of the bad habit. Good Luck.

I know her dog had a billion chew toys...
I told her to slowly let him out of his cage, when they are not there. (start with a 1/2 hr and move up).
She tried it and her dog was doing really well but the day she went to work (1st full day) the dog bit up her couch pillow! She thinks that dog was being spiteful...i dunno what to tell her

But the apple thing i will mention!

Please tell her that her dog is NOT being spiteful! He's just still a baby and some dogs take a long time to 'grow up'. My dog was chewing inappropriately until he was about 14 months.

Re: Dog Question

I had a ton of bones on hand, and whenever he would start to chew something else, I'd say NO! and give him a bone. BUT - if I wasn't home when it happened then I didn't do anything.

From what I read about things like this, you have to catch them in the act or they won't understand why you're mad/what they did wrong.

Her dog never bites her stuff when she is home!
Maybe i should tell her to go to a dog trainer?!

Sounds like separation anxiety.... I suggest crate training.

My dog had the disastrous streak in her; but I think she has finally gotten over it. I hope...

Best advice...call a professional, a trainer!

Alpha Dog Training, Marilyn is her name, she's in the yellow pages.
