dog question(from NW Board)

Thought you guys might be able to help as well as my NW buddies!

We are considering getting a dog...well I am anyway.... we want something small, a toy dog of some kind and are between two right now - scottish terrier(scottie) and the king charles cavalier spaniel. I prefer the latter, I never liked the snout and beard on the scotties - but don't know enough about either. Any opinions?
Background: we have 2 adult cats, no children (though will at some point down the line), great yard that can be fenced in and an office that we own, so we can take the new dog along to work.

I think scottish terriers are too darn hyper.. are those your only choices? what does thenheck is a king charles cavalier spaniel? is it a reg. cocker spaniel? if so I LOVE those.. they are soo loving..

king charles cavalier spaniel are supposed to be great dogs in terms of temperment, but I've heard that there are some significant health problems in the breed... so I'd suggest making sure you learn about those health problems, and making sure you work with a breeder who does everything within their power to prevent the issues...

I'm not to fond of scotties. They are really cute but the 2 that I have known were very snippy and not child friendly. For small dogs I love the Westies and my FMIL has a miniture cocker spaniel who is the cutest thing every. I have a beagle/fox hound mix and she's a great puppy but not small : ). Good luck choosing!!!

My Fh has a Bichon Frise (sp?) and he's such a good dog and he gets along GREAT with Fh's cat. And they didn't grow up together. The cat was brought into the house after Archie was already an adult.
