Dogs and Babies

Is anyone nervous about bringing the baby home to the dogs?
I have two dogs and they are both BARKERS! they bark constantly.. I am a little worried about this situation.

Oh boy do I sympathize with you! It's the worst. Mine barks constantly. We have been training her though. Every time she barks she gets a can shaken with coins in it. It's working…

Do you shake it near her or just pick it up and shake it where ever you are...My dog is so totally out of control..

wherever I am.

We hired this really crazy trainer guy to come in when I found out I was pregnant - because Abbey is REALLY bad. She NEVER bites, but she jumps, barks, chews, etc. The concept is called a Dog God. Any time she does something like that you shake it, and she doesn't relate it to you necessarily - so she thinks that the Dog God sees her even when you aren't around and eventually stops doing 'bad' things even in private. I have to say it works. I am down to one bark, Dog God, quiet. She actually lays down when she hears it. It's pretty incredible. Best not to really 'show it to her' because then she knows what to look for when you reach for it. They are very smart. But I have a can all over. Office, Bedroom, Kitchen, Living Room, etc.

Have your DH bring home a blanket from the nursery while you are still in the hospital. Hopefully this will get the dogs used to the scent of the baby. You may be amazed at how gentle and quiet the dogs will be with the baby. My dog will bark if you touch her hips since she has arthritis (she is 9). She somehow knows when it is the baby going after her and she just moves. She rarely makes a sound at the baby. Ask your vet for suggestions!

my parents had a dog when they brought me home...and they said it was amazing how the dog acted around me...not that he was crazy or anything before...but he would sit by my crib or bassonette (sp?) and guard me...even growing up he would play rough with my dad and even with my older sister...but never with me...

so there is hope...
Jenny I love that dog god concept...

Check the greatpets.com website. There's a lot of info about babies, kids & dogs. There are a lot of good tips on the site and behaviors to look out for, etc. The trainer who runs the website is the autor of Good Owners, Great Dogs and he's one of the top trainers in the country, so it comes from a good source.

I'm hoping for the best. Arnie is VERY good. Doesn't bite, rarely barks, but he's spoiled to the core and I'm hoping he doesn't get jealous or spiteful.

We plan to bring the baby's blanket or clothing home from the hospital and give it to Arnold to sniff, and then to 'introduce' him to the baby when we bring it home. I'm hoping he loves the baby...
