TALLMAN, N.Y. (AP) _ Four dogs who mauled a 5-year-old girl will be allowed to live but must be sent out of Rockland County and split up as part of the settlement of a criminal case against their owner.
The case was settled so Hayley Potter, now 6, would not have to testify about being attacked by the four pugs _ and a Rottweiler, already killed _ as she played in her back yard in Montebello last September. She was bitten on the head, face, neck, arms and upper torso.
Her family's attorney, Jeffrey Sherwin, said he expects to file a civil lawsuit seeking damages for what he said would be extensive plastic surgery.
The dogs belonged to a neighbor, Michaele Fried, who agreed to plead guilty to owning dangerous dogs, not keeping them properly leashed and not having proper licenses. He was fined $500 and must find homes for the dogs at separate locations acceptable to town officials, Ramapo Town Attorney Michael Klein said.
Klein said the case was settled with the approval of Hayley's family. Fried's lawyer, Marianne Merritt, said her client agreed to plead guilty to save the child having to testify, after being assured that the dogs would not be destroyed.
'We're satisfied with this arrangement,' Merritt said. 'We wish the best for Miss Potter.'
