I have been thinking quite a bit about not giving favors and giving a donation to my favorite organization in lieu of favors What do you think?
Has anyone done this?
How did it go over with your guests?
A lot of our guests are from out of town and I would not like them to carry with too much Also, about 1/2 our guest are doctors and lawyers (do to both our careers and family members) and I thought they will appreciate and understand the donation....as a matter of fact....I think most people will understand.
In case I don't do the donations, most guests drink wine so I thought about giving wine botthe stoppers.
What do you think....donation or wine stopper?
How would you feel if you did not receive a favor?
I NEED HELP!! THANKS

Re: Donations in lieu of favors
We are doing donations to the American Cancer Society. I lost my mother to lung cancer and I feel this is a way to include her. I feel that some favors people won't remember to take or won't appreciate. Also depending on where you donate they give you something to give the guests so they aren't going home empty handed!

We did a donation to the American Cancer Society, and people loved it. People actually pulled me aside and thanked me for doing it. HTH.

I think Donating to charity is great but it should never be in lieu of something.
If you are going to donate money to a charity it should be from the heart not instead of favors

Thanks for your comment, but when people donate instead of favors it is because it is from our heart. If you read most of the comments here you will realize that these brides here are doing the donation because they have lost someone dear to their heart and they believe a donation is much more meaningful than a favor; for some is even a way to include their love ones in the wedding. So what .......they decide to give a donation to charity instead of favors!! I don't think brides (at least not me) are giving donations because it is cheaper or anything like that. Try to read the comments here and you will realize how meaninful the donation is.

um...thats the whole point of donating to a charity in lieu of favors....that you don't want to spend the money on favors that would have just gone to some retail store....and that this money was spent on a donation. therefore the couple is saying 'We feel that instead of buying favors that may not be used or appreciated.....we are spending this money on a charity because this is something that is dear to us'
i'm not sure how that is not from the heart?

How can you say this? It is from the heart--hence the world 'donation'
According to Merriam-Webster: Main Entry: do·na·tion Pronunciation: \do-'na-sh?n\ Function: noun Etymology: Middle English donatyowne, from Latin donation-, donatio, from donare to present, from donum gift; akin to Latin dare to give — more at date Date: 15th century : the act or an instance of donating: as a: the making of a gift especially to a charity or public institution b: a free contribution : gift
With that being said-- can you say every single wedding favor you have gotten in the past, you have saved and put them to good use. Chances are no. So with a donation, everyone benefits from it. The charity now has a donation, party goers don't have another gift that can collect dust, and the bride/groom are happy they just helped a charity that is important to them.

Re: Donations in lieu of favors
really think about your guests and what they are expecting and decide if you are going to do what they expect or what you truely believe in...
are you going to care that they grumble about not getting a proper favor like at so and so's wedding...

Re: Donations in lieu of favors
We did a dual donation (to two special causes) and I cannot tell you how many people came up to my husband and I throughout the wedding to say how nice it was that we were doing that....If you want them to go home with something we did the 5 almonds with the poem that goes with it so that people had something to take home too....i find the gifts to be a waste of money as most people dont appreciate them...Atleast the $$$ goes to a good cause...JMO

Re: Donations in lieu of favors
I just recently discovered the I Do foundation... check them out... they are all about helping a couple incorporate charity into their wedding. I think there's something beautiful about starting out your wedding by giving back in some way... after all, we are all so fortunate to be able to live the lives we do in this country and have found someone we want to marry and be able to afford a wedding (of whatever scale).
The I Do foundation site had so many ideas I never would have thought of- so many ways we could connect our wedding to giving back- from donating excess food (if the venue will let you- if not, direct them to the website and suggest they think about it- I got a venue I didn't even go with to start donating food!), to reducing your carbon footprint to making charitable donations.
