If you're in NYC there are several small independent knitting shops and those sort of places generally teach knitting. You might check with them. Also check things like your local library and Leaning Annex for classes. Michael's sometimes offers them too.

Re: don't laugh - I want to learn to knit
I decided I wanted to learn to knit last december, so for Christmas the FMIL got me a giant basket filled with knitting needles in all different sizes and all different types of yarn... I actually taught myself. 'Knitting for dummies' helped me greatly. There is also a kids knitting book that I took out from the childrens section of the library which helped me greatly!
For a while I just practiced the knit stich and made SO many beautiful scarves! It is so much fun!
For classes, I would check your school districts continueing education classes... mine offers knitting classes really cheap. Teaching yourself is also a great option if you want to do simple scarves. good luck!!

Re: don't laugh - I want to learn to knit
I just learned on Sunday, I LOVE IT! i'm making the coolest scarf for my friend for a christmas present!
My mom bought me a book 'Tought myself to Knit'... it tought me in 2 days! ha ha... they have it at Michaels... they also have a crochet one too! YEAH!
I crochet and I love it! I can't knit, I mean I can't teach myself anyhow, I taught myself with crochet.
Its fun and relaxing!

Re: don't laugh - I want to learn to knit
I taught myself to both knit and crochet. it REALLY is NOT hard. Knitting has TWO stitches (really, only two). Crochet has more, but they really are just variations on... about 3 main stitches.
I like knitting better, more because the 'fabric' it makes is nicer - IMO, crochet is good for things like afghans/pillows/home stuff - NOT for clothing.
it's so nice to be able to do something in otherwise 'wasted' time (like when I'm watching tv!)

Re: don't laugh - I want to learn to knit
i posted this link in the crafts section. it has good videos of the techniques. Knitting help
I just learned to knit a couple months ago and I love it. I'm almost done one cable sweater, and I'm making a cute red sweater to wear for Christmas. I made myself and my husband a scarf. I crochet too but i prefer knitting for clothes. And afghans are better crocheted. knitting is pretty easy once you figure out the basic stitches.

Re: don't laugh - I want to learn to knit
I just taught myself to knit last week!! I actually went to Michaels and bought a basic knitting kit that is for kids ages 8 and up and it is very basic, easily explained and the kit cost $8. I now know how to make a blanket and a scarf. It was really easy instructions and I figured I can now get longer knitting needles and different yarn and make larger items. It;s great and no classes to take, just a do-it-a-home thing!!!

Re: don't laugh - I want to learn to knit
I just learned how to knit this weekend. I was in a yarn store in lindenhurst shopping with a friend for her mom and i saw the nicest yarn and thought i'd give it a try. I bought a book from barnes and nobles and taught myself. It's very relaxing. I'm attempting my first scarf. It might take me till the summer to finish it
