Dortonis
I'm so sad! I'm having my wedding at Larkfield. They told us the cake they get from Dortonis is included. FH and I went last night for our cake tasting. We wrote up an order form for a cake to feed 225 people. Yellow cake, mixed berry with chantilly cream. Fondant on outside with large flower on side. They said what I wanted wasn't fully included in what Larkfield would pay. They quoted me at $950!!!! When I asked how much Larkfield was paying and what the TOTAL amount of the va,e was, the lady said she didn't know. She said she only knew what her boss told her what we would owe ourselves. I need some advice!! Is this typical??? How much do cakes cost??

Re: Dortonis
I would ask them for a breakdown of the extra expenses and then you can decide what makes the most sense to you.I was not a Dortoni bride but for my cake tasting I would told what was included. I was told certain flavors, fondant, sugar flowers, etc were extra. I did not get any extras but he would have priced each one separately.
I think $950 for fondant and a sugar flower is a lot. Look into having your florist add flowers to save money. I had butter cream which they made smooth and decorated it with scrolls and dots. I supplied ribbon and bling.

Before you commit to it because you have plenty of time, also go try Black Forest in Lindenhurst because they are the other bakery for Larkfield.. I went to Dortoni's and wasn't thrilled with the cakes that were included so we are going to Black Forest tomorrow for a tasting and to see what they can offer. Dortoni's won't tell you the price that is included, they will give Larkfield the bill and larkfield will add the extras onto your final bill.

Re: Dortonis
that seems like a lot. we got a cake from an outside bakery and it was like $1500 or around that range for a whole actual cake.

When we went to Dortinis i just did what was included. She asked any extras and when i said does that cost more she was like yeah; I was like no thanks. I really wanted cupcakes but was not paying all that extra. So im hoping that i have no extra added to my bill. Try the other bakery and see what happens. Do you really need/ want fondant? I know and flowers can add up.

Ugh, I'm going for my tasting there tomorrow. I don't want anything extravagant(I don't like fondant), but I'm sure I'll get charged for them to smooth the buttercream or something like that. My venue recently switched to them and the old bakery had more choices, though I have heard good things about the cakes themselves.

I live around the corner from Dortonis and looooove their stuff! But yeah I would basically just go in there and ask them to show you what is included in your venue's price. Tell her you don't really want to pay for anything extra and see what they come up with. My venue was able to show us a book of about 30 cakes we could choose from that wouldn't cost us anything. If we wanted anything different than what was in the picture, we had to pay extra. SO I just chose one from the book .

Re: Dortonis
That's the problem. They didn't have a book and had no idea what Larkfield would pay. I'm wondering if Larkfield has a book?

I just came from there. They showed me a book of what's included and I was pleasantly surprised by some of the styles. I'm doing 4 tiers with ivory buttercream and gold scrollwork and I'm going to have spacers between the layers which I'll have my florist fill with ivory roses. Zero extra charge. I thought for sure I was going to get charged for things like non-white scrollwork and the spacers, but nope. I was very happy!ETA: the number of tiers is based on the number of guests you're having

Went to Black Forest today and am so happy I did. They had 4 books to look for. Basically anything buttercream is included either chocolate or vanilla and the had a list of add ons and how much the add ons costed. We are doing a 4 tiered cake, bottom tier square, the rest round. Ivory buttercream with white scrollwork and ivory and white piped roses. That was all included. 2 tiers vanilla cake with cannoli filling and chocolate mousse and 2 tiers chocolate cake with cookies and cream and chocolate mousse. The baker couldn't have been more helpful and she was wonderful to work with.
