For some reason I just can't get motivated to do them. I think I have a magnet that I'm going to send but I also need to send my OOT guests info on hotel stuff. Do I need to include the places to see and do with STD as well? I'm so annoyed.

Re: Dreading doing save the dates
I am right with you on that one!!! It has been my most annoying task!!! If you feel motivated to include a list of things to do, then by all means!!! I am not and I don't feel it is absolutely necessary!! I think you will feel much better when you have them out!!!

Re: Dreading doing save the dates
Could somebody explain the whole 'save the date' concept to me. I don't quite get it. Is it necessary if you have having a limited amount of OOT guests. Is it just supposed to remind poeple of the wedding day?

Re: Dreading doing save the dates
i sent out STD without hotel info because at that point i did not know the particulars...
since our wedding is to be on the smaller side, my mom is thinking of contacting those OOTers that will definitely need a place to stay and ask if they want us to hold a room for them.
i am not going to include a 'places to see' because most of my OOTers lived in NYC metro area at some point in their lives and know what to do already.

Basically it informs people that you're getting married. If you have a lot of OOTs you can reminds them of the date and provide them with hotel info like you mentioned. They will probably have to start making plans earlier. Or if you have a holiday weekend wedding would be another good reason. Its certainly not a must.

Since you are getting married on a holiday weekend, you should really do them!! When we sent ours we didn't have hotel info yet (but I included them in Christmas cards). We did not send 'stuff to do'. The main reason we did STD's was (a) FH loved the magnet idea (I was excited he was excited about something!) and (b) we had been engaged for eight months before we set a date (illness/death in the family) so we wanted to get the word out as soon as we set a date.
Good luck!

a little bit of both...
in this day and age with everyone busy busy busy it's good to give people a heads up so they can plan accordingly.
for us, since 1/2 our guest list is OOT, sending out save-the-dates gets people talking and you get at least an idea of who will 'definitely' be there well in advance so you can perhaps adjust your local vs. OOT ratio accordingly.
those who will be traveling appreciate more time to scope out the best deals on flights and coordinate vacations, a save-the-date gets them thinking...

I hope getting married on labor day weekend helps them remember. Is it usually sent before or after the invitations.

Among other things. I'm with you, NYCHICK. Even though we're getting married on a holiday weekend, we decided against them. We felt the actual invitation was more of an impact and plan on sending them out a month earlier than most other people send them out (probably 12-16 weeks in advance).

Re: Dreading doing save the dates
If you really want to do them, I suggest doing them as soon as you can. We were going to do them, but we kept putting it off until we realized that invitations were do to go out and there was no point in doing STDs. I was very dissapointed. My FH is an artist and he created a beautiful design....first we were gonna use it for engagement annoucement, but we waited too long, and then the same thing happened with the STDs. So as I said do them before you find yourself with no time left!

Re: Dreading doing save the dates
I hate to be a nag, but I'm getting married the same day as you and already sent out STDs to OOT guests.
I did not send out hotel information or things to see. My STDs were very to-the-point - 'hey, we're getting married, and it's Labor Day weekend, so don't make any other plans.'
Do it soon!! It really isn't much of a chore. I did it over a week or two and addressed maybe 10 each night (because I'm lazy and have a short attention span!). You can do this!!

Re: Dreading doing save the dates
You dont HAVE to do save the dates if it annoys you! You dont have to include anything if you do. I just sent them to the out of towners to make sure they had plenty of time for preparation. :)

Re: Dreading doing save the dates
I thought I was the only one procrastinating about the STDs ...
I've had them ready to go, save for a few addresses I'm waiting for from both families... my FH designed them himself and we were soo excited to send them! Meanwhile, I just cannot get myself to sit down and actually WRITE them out!
Unfortunately, I think they are necessary b/c we're having a summer wedding, and I know a lot of my friends/family make vacation plans (lots of teachers that we know!) And I DO want certain people to be there.. it would upset me if they weren't.
SO I Better get a move on it ! But I understand what you're going thru!!

Re: Dreading doing save the dates
Thanks. I think i just found one I like. Now all I have to do it get it together. I'm not the craftiest woman in the world. I can do this!!!!
I've been totally procrastinating doing a save the date as well. I feel as though when we got engaged and then picked a date and place that we told everyone then. I am going to do one, but its going to be a postcard that has the date, time, place and say details to follow. I have a design and a printer lined up, but just haven't gotten to doing it. With the way things are going, I may get them out and one month later be sending my wedding invitation.
