Dress issues- UPDATE

Dress issues- UPDATE

so, I am a little down because I am rethinking having my lovely dress made. Out of the two friends that are making it (one is doing pattern design and construction, the other is doing the embroidery and sewing) the latter is leaving to go home to Cyrpus next weekend and will be going until September. We haven't started the dress yet, and my friend that is staying is concerned that my other friend is biting off more than she can chew.

when she gets back, she will have to sew 7 dresses bet. September and April.

Although I love the design of my dress, I would never spend that much money on it by buying it (more than $5000!!!!), so my choices are either to trust that my friends will be able to get it done, find someone else to make it, or to start dress hunting again and just buy it.

Here is a poll. thoughts are appreciated.

Re: Dress issues

oh that stinks!

IMO, and this is not meant to offend anyone- I would buy another dress. God forbid something goes wrong- not only do you not have your dress but your relationship with your friends would be hurt too. I am a big fan of being able to see feel and try on the dress beforehand_ JMO.

I would just tell your friends you fell in love with something else

Re: Dress issues

If your one friend is staying, can't you find someone else to do the embroidery if your other friend can't make it. I understand that you can't spend $5K on that dress, but there are others out there that are much more affordable. Maybe you won't find the exact one but you should be able to find something similar! Good luck Jess, sorry this is happening!

Re: Dress issues

I would sit down with the both of them and say something along these lines...

'This is something really important to me, please be honest with me and let me know if this is something you can truly handle. This is going to be one of the most important days of my life and my dress is one of the most important things about my big day... I won't be hurt, mad or anything....I will completely understand.' See what both of their reactions are and take it from there. If they seem unsure about themselves, then I would hire outside help... Talk to them both first and then evaluate your options....

I am so sorry that you are going through this...I personally would start to shop for another dress...In my eyes 'diseaster' is written all over this...What happens if your friend comes back from Cyprus & can't finish your dress in time?? Just when you enter crunch time, you have to worry about a dress & finding something....If your friend promised that she can do this & then she can't hold up her end of the bargain, would you be able to forgive her & have no hard feelings???

It is so difficult bc the price is right & but I live by the motto 'if it is too good to be true, it might be!'

I'm going against everyone else, but I have faith in your friend. She knows how important the wedding dress is to you (duh) and I'm sure she wouln't take on more than she can handle. I suggest expressing your concern to the one leaving for Cyprus, and tell her that if she can't do it - then you need to start looking now. My wedding's around yours, and I won't be going to the dressmaker until January - don't fret! There's plenty of time. You're ahead of the game Jess!

Chris,

does your dressmaker do machine embroidery?

Thanks girls. I have to figure this out.

Jessica,

I think you should contact outside help, if for nothing else, just to get a ballpark figure about the price. I have read a bunch of posts where people have their dresses made for a good price.

Actually the (wonderfully sweet, but 85-ish year old) aunt of my dreaded FSIL was a wedding dress maker for many many years. I couldn't ask her to make it- she seems so tiny and frail, but I may ask her for some contacts. I am just trying to figure out HOW to do this w/o involving FSIL....

I think my wedding dress would weigh more than she does!! although, she did make FH's nieces communion dress for this weekend.......

I'll keep you posted. thanks again!

Re: Dress issues

I would sit both of your friends down and ask them if they really think they can make the dress. I would also get prices from dress makers to see and compare.
That is your dream dress that dress is the dress and if you go looking for another dress your not going to be completely happy unless you have that dress.
Look at the options before you go and look for another dress.

good luck and keep us posted

I agree with Andreia. I think that your friends both know what they can and can not do and since this is your wedding gown they will be very hinest if they can swing it. I know your down but it is better t find this out now so you ahve time to think of other options.

Good luck!

Re: Dress issues- UPDATE

so, after speaking with my friend that is staying in NYC (my other friend that is leaving for Cyprus is in Hawaii right now ) and speaking for FSIL ( ) I have decided that FSIL's aunt, who has been making wedding dresses for 70 plus years, will be making my dress instead.

I still get my dress, but I have to 'fire' my friends....they will still be doing the BP dresses though (FSIL aunt can't take on that much anymore)

So far, the friend I have spoken to is very understanding (and a little relieved)...my other friend is coming back from Hawaii today....she may be upset, but what can I do.

Hmm...this is a tough one, b/c you absolutelydon't want to have to worry about dresses being finished in addition to other wedding worries. You may want to shop around for a dress & see if there is anything else you like.

seems like it is working out...I am sure your friend will not be upset...It is actually less she has to worry about & she is not under the gun so much now!

I'm sure everything will be fine with your friend, she shouldn't be upset. Sounds like you've got a good plan going now! Yay! Glad it worked out for you!!
