When you went for your dress and they took the measurements for the order - were you wearing your corsette?
I ask because I took mine off thinking we were done and then they took 'preliminary' measurements since I won't actually be ordering my dress until October. I was floored that they wanted to order a size bigger than the sample dress I had on (which had to be clipped).

Re: Dress Measurements
they always order a size bigger then you are they say it's because they can take the dress in but not out. i think it's so they get more money for the alterations

Thats weird, no I had the corset off (I think) when they took the measurments, I fit into the sample size they had it was just a little too big, they ordered me that size...

Re: Dress Measurements
I think often the store orders a size larger than the sample size if the sample fit just right, because these sample dresses are totally stretched out. You might fit perfectly in the sample, but the new dress they order won't be nearly as stretched out, and might be a tight fit. The same thing happened for me... I fit perfectly in the sample, which was a 10, but they ordered a 12, reasoning that the sample isn't accurate... I think it's reasonable... as long as they don't go up TOO many sizes!

After taking my measurements, she said that the sample which I think was a 10 also, was good accordning to measurements...she also said that the particular sample I tried on was relatively new.

Re: Dress Measurements
I tried on a 12 first and it was just a little too small - the arms were too tight and it wouldn't quite zip up top. So I tried on an 18 and that of course was very big compared to the 12. They had to roll the extra material and clip so I could see the dress. Then they took measurements and told me they would have to order a 20! How could that be? I could understand a 16 just to be on the safe side but a 20? She said that they have to take the biggest measurement - my hips but that according to the chart my top was only a 14. The bottom is more like a ballgown so I don't really think that the bottom should matter too much - especially since the 12 could zipper up in that area without any problems. Any advice?

Re: Dress Measurements
they took my measurements over my clothes... i am not wearing a corset anyway... i don't know if that helps i am pretty sur ethey take it with it off because also the girls in their were getting measured when they came out of teh dressing room
they usually order a bigger size because it is easier to take in than take out
i told them my measurements (they also took them) but i told them what i would be.... i wanted the smaller dress and said i would take full responsibility
i always tend to lose weight before i attend an affair AND THIS TIME it is MY AFFAIR

That is definitly how they get ordered, according to your biggest measurement

Sounds a little fishy... I could understand if they went one or two sizes up from the 12, but 20 is over the top... they are supposed to order from your largest measurement, but if you have a ballgown your hip size doesn't matter because the dress isn't fitted in that area... so the dress should be ordered according to your largest size in either the chest or waist. I would find the size chart for your designer, take your own measurements, and look at what size is more appropriate according to your chest and waist. Then call them back... don't let them order too many sizes up just so they can charge extra for alternations...

Re: Dress Measurements
Sample gowns are normally stretched out of shape anyway. Alot of time a person who is in a size 20 is pushed into a size 10gown and the seams give just a little which maybe why they ordered you a size larger than the sample.

Yes, that's right. Anyway, it makes sence to order a larger size - its easier to take in, then to take out.
I was measured with only a strapless bra (for my fittings I bought my long lined bra) and they measured me wrong - they were already squeezing me in a size I wouldn't have fit (I would probably fit now since I lost weight), but to be on the safe side I ordered the next size up.

I had the same kind of problem when I went to buy my dress. I tried on a 10 in the store and that fit pretty well but by my largest measurement, the manufacturer website said I should order an 18!!! When I called Netbride (where I ordered it from) they tried to help but pretty much told me they recommend you going by the sizing chart - though another website said to order the one that fit the most closely to all your measurements. Since I knew the 10 in the store fit pretty ok - but I was also told they are often very stretched out - I ordered a 12 and it fit pretty well. Mostly the only alterations I needed was the hem. I think to tell you you need a 20 sounds like a bit much.
