FH will be unavailable for 1-2 weeks. Is it wrong for me to jump to looking for a dress until he can check the halls with me. Have any of you girls checked halls without your FH and then presented the prices/menus to him?

Re: Dress or hall first?
I wish I had started looking at halls w/o FH. HE complained about going to so many.
I think you can, just do not book anything without him.

Re: Dress or hall first?
I didn't go to any halls without him...but I did request information and packets from halls that I was interested in and showed them to FH - from there, we made the decisions together.
If you're anxious to do some planning...it is NEVER too early to shop - go look at some dresses!

I agree - just rule out the ones you don't like!

Re: Dress or hall first?
Your dress won't give you a problem with dates...like say getting the DJ before getting the hall so no, dress shopping first is fine.
I did go check out a few places with out my FI cause he had to work...just take a friend if you do not want to go alone.

Re: Dress or hall first?
Okay, this may sound corny, but when my FI couldn't come looking with me, I took a video camera. Actually, it only happened once that he couldn't come, but we took the camera even if we were both there. It helped to go back and look at them all and compare them. We also showed our families. You kinda have alot of time so I don't think you need to rush and go without him, unless you are anxious to start. How does he feel about it? Does he want to go look or is he okay for you to go and just report back?

Re: Dress or hall first?
My FI went with me to look, but my friend booked a place w/o her fiance so I guess it depends on your circumstances (they were long-distance). In my opinion, I would hold on buying the dress until you book a hall, it helps to know where the wedding will be before you buy a dress. But, definately go to stores & get a feel for what you like.

Re: Dress or hall first?
FH trusts my judgement so I did all the research and legwork but he came with me to the hall, the church, and the photographer. I booked the florist without him (went with Mom and a BM) because he doesn't know a tulip from a daisy
I would do the hall first though since they book up quickly. I had almost everything done BEFORE I ordered my dress.

I love you ladies, sooo helpful! I agree with you guys never too early to start. I am getting so excited. Thanks again! Oh yeah one more thing, what is an acceptable amount of time to spend on this board before you are officially an addict? LOL Thanks again.

I did most of the hall shopping w/o FH but once I narrowed it down to 2-3 he went with me & helped w/the final decision.

Re: Dress or hall first?
& I started looking immediately after getting engaged, which was Jan. 2002 - & got 2002 prices in many cases. It's def. never too early!

Re: Dress or hall first?
Look for a hall or wedding reception venue first and get your Fi's input before making any deposits or bookings. Your Fi have a much right to know all about the hall/reception venue since it's also his big day. DH and I went to every venue together during our appointments with banquet managers. We've also inquired by phone, internet, and e-mail about 40 venues in Manhattan, outer boroughs and LI which nothing suits our needs. In the end we narrowed it down to 3 and take both mothers for a viewing. It was important that both mothers are involved in the initial decision for the hall/venue selection and booking since it was their daughter and son's big day as well as their finances to pay for our wedding.
Wait for your Fi to return from his trip but in the mean time you can certainly inquire by phone, internet or e-mail and make a list with all the information to present it to your Fi upon his return.
Good luck.

I think you can look into places, but ultimately show him the best ones. You can always look for dresses, it's sooooo much fun, but wait until you know for sure your time of year (satin can be hot for summer, etc.)
