Dress search..strange experience

This was sort of strange and I was just wondering if other gals have had the same experience...

Yesterday I went to try on dresses for the first time. Of course the first thing the consultant said (after rolling her eyes) was your wedding is in OCTOBER? You may be too late to order a dress (ie: you need to do it today). I understand that the dresses take a long time to come in, but I was sort of put off by her attitude...I've only been engaged for three weeks!! Was I supposed to start shopping before the proposal?

Before my appt, I told the consultant (on the phone) that I was interested in v-neck/halter top/off the shoulder etc. Needless to say..all the dresses she pulled were strapless. She kept putting me in dresses that SHE liked, but that were not my style. I was not 'allowed' to help her select gowns for me to try on!! I even brought pictures of gowns that I liked...but that did not seem to help the consultant. It's a good thing my friend was with me..at one point she stuck her head into the dress closet and pointed at a few gowns (one of those was a halter that we all LOVED).

Could not take pictures either... I don't know..I was dissapointed. Has this happened to anyone? Thanks.

I had the same experience with the first place that I went to. I ended up going through the racks myself and finding the dresses that I wanted to try on (they got a little pissy about that - oh well) . They also told me the same thing. I got engaged in Jan, didn't start looking for dresses until Feb and they were giving me a hard time as well. Lets just say, I ordered my dress the last week of March and the dress came in the middle of August. (not all places can get them that fast - you just have to find a place that will.

My first experience was Kleinfelds and the lady wouldn't listen to what I wanted she kept pulling 4500 dollar dresses when I told her the highest I would go was 2500. Needless to say i did not buy from them. I went to Bridal Reflection in Carle Place and they really were wonderful. I went in November for my wedding in June. They told me I had until the first week of December to order. You have plenty of time just make a date that you have to make a decision by.

I had a very similar experience when I was looking and was turned off also. I walked out and knew I would never go back.

i cant believe her attitude. i am getting married in oct as well. i went to davids bridal in carle place. i had a picture of a dress, halter with lots of embriodery. and i told her what i didnt like. no strappless, no sleeves. we looked she had me involved in picking dresses. nobody gave me an attitude because i waited 3 mths to look for a dress. i even took pictures. i defenatley would have said something to her or a supervisor. its your wedding, your money that you decided to spend there. i would try davids i dont know where you are located. me selden(it took 40mins or so) they all have the same type of styles. and they are really cheap. not ina bad way. if they want your bussiness they would care how you feel. ditch that place. good luck!!!!!

You should pick a place where they will listen to you, but it is not unusual for them to not allow you to take photos until after you buy a dress. I think they don't want you taking photos and then going elsewhere to buy the same dress.

I found the whole dress thing a headache. I ordered my dress in March for a November wedding and it came in August. I think some of these bridal people are a bit loony.

When I went to go get my dress I brought pictures with me also. The woman looked at the pictures and said 'ok we will try those on,but i want you to consider a few others too' well needless to say, the ones i picked out looked awful on me, and the suggestions she made were much more oriented to my body type. she knew her stuff. But it sounds like you got more of an attitude from them and I am sorry to hear that!

Also, a lot of places will not let you take pictures unless you buy the dress.

I have to agree. I went to David's Bridal as well and they were great. The dresses are reasonably priced and beautiful. I went through there catalog before I went and folded down each gown that I wanted to try on. I showed them to the woman and those are the only dresses she brought out. SHe didn't force a thing on me and let me take all the pictures I wanted (which was a must because my mom lives in NY and I am in NC and I knew if she wasn't in on the decision making she would have killed me!!!)

Thanks for the advice everyone. You can bet that I won't be back to that place. I'm in Babylon so I'll try the place in Bay Shore. Has anyone had any success with Adriennes in Islip?

I won't be going back there but, in all honesty, it WAS fun to try on the dresses, even though they were not my style. And the last one, the halter dress really made me feel like a bride. I felt beautiful.

Thank you all so much.

I think that it's a scam how they tell you about ordering your dress and taking months to come in. I ordered my dress and it came in less than 4 weeks. They called the designer while I was there to make sure. And the consultant that I got was a sweetheart. She listened to what I was looking for and also gave me suggestions when I asked her. She wasn't pushy at all and left myself and MOH alone so we can discuss which dress I liked the more. I tried 10 dresses that day until I found the one. If you encounter customer service like that, I would not give them my business. Hope your next shopping dress experience is better and more fun !!!

My Sales lady was a little pushy but after she suggested a dress that I thought was way out of my style desire and it ended up being 'The One' she was kind of helpful.

It really does depend though on the dress and the designer because I ordered my dress in august and it still hasn't come in yet, so just make sure that you have enough time to buy it for october--make sure they call and see if the dress is in teh warehouse if they do it will come in much quicker than if they actually have to make it. Good luck and don't let anyone push you into something you don't like--its your big day. I went to macy's and they were great!

When I was shopping, even if I really liked a dress or dress selection, I did not go back to stores with customer service like that (MACY'S!) I hate pushy, obnoxious salespeople that don't listen. Do not give them your money - there are beutiful dresses EVERYWHERE.

Re: Dress search..strange experience

I think that in many cases, the bridal consultants in most salons see the vulnerability in the brides they serve. This is why they push you. You may ask them for a certain price range but OF COURSE they are going to show you a more expensive model. It's the old fashiopned 'bait and switch'. They try to entice you with a much more expensive dress and you'd fall in love with it. When you say you can't afford it, they find you one that is not quite as expensive but STILL more than you set out to pay originally.

As far as your timeline goes, don't let her freak you into thinking that it is too late. My sister was engaged in July and was married the following January less than 6 months later. She got her dress at Kleinfeld and it all worked out just fine. Sometimes you just have to pay a little more to get your dress faster. Everything comes with a price.

Pictures? They never let you take pictures because they dont want you buying the dress someplace else.

Pushy sales people? You can do one of two things, either talk to her manager or go someplace else. I hate to sound like a kiss-a** but I am overly nice to salespeople. It helps me get what I want in the end and they are more likely to help you.

I had the same thing happen to me at a store, your best bet is to not make an appt and just go and try on dresses. Also I went to Angels Bridals in East Islip and had a great experience and did not feel pressured at all.
