I don't think it's too soon. Some 2011 brides have already ordered their dresses. I'm planning on starting to look next month.
Honestly, in my opinion I think it is a little early only because the new 2010 styles are going to start coming out real soon. I would just wait a little longer I looked and found mine about 15 months before.
it's never too soon to start looking but I personally wouldn't make a decision/purchase until about a year out. You want to make sure the dress you find is THE dress for you and than after that STOP LOOKING! My fear is that if I find/purchase a dress now I am not going to be able to stop myself from looking at dresses and I may wind up changing my mind and become a two dress bride.

I couldn't agree more. I have a feeling that I wouldn't be able to stop looking! I don't think it hurts to start looking now tho!

um yea..I'm psycho & got engaged Christmas day.. started looking day after New Year's & ordered my dress in March..it still hasn't come in which is fine by me haha..but I don't think it's ever too soon. It depends on the person. If you are a person that changed your mind alot then I'd wait to buy but if no then go for it!..In the meantime looking won't hurt it will get to to realzie what styles you like on you. I ended up picking a style totally different than what I had thought!
