Up until now, wedding planning has been a dream. I'm loving doing all these wedding tasks and it's just been a lot of fun (maybe not the check writing, but that's for another post, haha).
The one question I've been getting asked since we got engaged practically is 'Do you have your dress yet??' Now, even though I've always dreamed about getting my wedding dress, the idea of going shopping is the one thing that I have been putting off, and probably will put off for as long as I can...Everything else I have wanted to do right away...not this...and now, seeing that my wedding is almost one year away, I'm starting to panic.
I'm a plus size bride (from Brooklyn) and I am just not looking forward to dress shopping at all. I'm having nightmares about not being able to actually try on a dress (just holding it in front of me or something) or if I do try on dresses, it will be from a choice of 4 plus size samples that look exactly alike and that's it.
Not to mention my older sister (who is a street size 2) just got married this summer, and I know that our dress experiences will be very different. She went to 10 different shops and probably tried on 100 dresses before the found her dress. I feel like with me, I'm not going to have those kind of options....its going to be 'its that white sack or this white sack.'
I don't know what I'm looking for here...a pep talk? Share your experience? Thanks for listening.

Don't stress!! They have dresses out there for every body type! I found most of the sample dresses are mid-range in size- maybe a street size 8- so that plus size brides and skinny minnies alike can try on the dresses. And they can work magic with those big jumper cable looking clips! It really gives you a good idea of how the dress will hug your figure! Also, why not try starting at a store liek David's Bridal where they have all sizes. DB has some absolutely beautiful dresses! Good luck!

Re: Dress Shopping Panic Attack
I found that it was a lot easier trying dresses on that had a corset back because they kinda can open up and stay on you. also i high ly recommend Macys Bridal. I am plus size but i am small on top so i was able to shimmy in to most dresses, but my sister was bigger than me and went to macys and she had more plus size dress options to choose from.
Also check out people that carry Alfered angelo, he has a whole line of plus size. and Davids bridal has plus size dresses to try on.

Re: Dress Shopping Panic Attack
Lots of stores carry plus size these days! Most dresses I tried on were around a 10 (which is about my size) but I actually did try on larger gowns (12-16) because that was all they had in that dress (or maybe they had a teeny size and didn't bother LOL). Don't worry! Just pick a store and go! If it makes you feel better, ask if they have a large selection of plus size gowns when you make your appointment. I know DB does have a lot!

Don't stress out, the other girls are right. They have plenty of stores that have plus size dresses. I'm with you, I don't like going to 20 different spots to see what I like. I tried on a few and that was that!. You will be fine....

Re: Dress Shopping Panic Attack
Since you are from Brooklyn why don't you try Doris fashions on 18th Avenue & 68th Street. If you are from the neighborhood then you know they are a small store but have a huge selection of dresses for everyone. There is also Valentina's Bridal on New Utrecht Ave & 77th or 76th Street.
Just remember that every bride is beautiful no matter what size you are and there is a dress out there for you that will make you feel like the princess you are.
Good Luck
P.S. And nowadays the stores know that not everyone is a size 2 and they are starting to carry larger size samples to accommodate a normal size girl.

You will find a dress that is perfect and that will make you feel fabulous. I would strongly suggest going to Kleinfelds because they have a very big selection of plus size dresses...and samples.

You will definately find your dress - and you will find one that makes you feel like the bride you want to be! I wouldn't stress it before it happens. Also don't panic, you still have a year until your wedding. I just got my gown the other week, with about 6 months left till my wedding date. I also dreaded going to try on dresses because I didn't think the samples would fit me right and I'd get discouraged, but the first dress I put on I got and absolutely love it!

Re: Dress Shopping Panic Attack
FM me and we'll talk.
You and I seem to have a lot in common.
This question is driving me crazy too and if my mother asks me one more time what I'm doing baou tmy dress I'm not giving her any grandchildren.
I had a good experience at Paradise. I had a GREAT experience at Village Bridal.
Well, I should rephrase. the service at PAradise was great, but Village Bridal had more of the style of gowns (more modern) in plus sizes than PAradise did. But Liz at Paradise was an AMAZING consultant... she can't help what the inventory is. The service at Village wasn't quite as personalized but the dresses were gorgeous and great prices. I'm going back in a few weeks to finalize my choice, I have it narrowed down to a handful.
You'll find something and you'll feel like the most beautiful girl in the world, I promise.
PS, I meant to tell you that so many places have plus size samples, I was surprised. I also went to Fantasia Bridal in Rocky Point and I've heard great things about Lillettes. Do some searches on here, there are TONS of threads with people's experiences and suggestions for locations, you won't be as limited as you're thinking. Just keep and open mind and be willing to travel a little bit, like to MAnhattan and Long Island.

Don't worry. I was concerned too. I am plus size as well and I found a decent selection at David's Bridal and ended up coosing something I never thought I would want. I tried it on just to see what the white chiffon would look like and ... that was the one.

Re: Dress Shopping Panic Attack
I am a 14 street size, I tried on many size 12 dresses and some were snug but in all the right places. I too was very nervous about trying on dresses. I never wear a dress, I am a jeans and tshirts girl, so just thinking of wearing a dress stresses me out. I went to two places on LI and the largest sizes they had were 12's, in the style I was looking for. I LOVE LOVE corset dresses now. Look in my album and you can see they type of dress I picked. I felt wonderful in the corset dresses, it held me in and it looked like I had no fatty stomach.
I think if I can do it anyone can! Have fun and relax. Also call the store to make an appt and ask them what is the largest size they carry. If they are too small then move on. ALWAYS try the dress on and be open to other styles. Good Luck!

Re: Dress Shopping Panic Attack
Don't fret! I'm 'technically' plus-sized (I'm a 10 street size), and I'm 5'11' so I had a lot of trouble fitting into dresses--moreso because of my height. After my first nightmare of a dress experience, I wound up going by myself just to see what kind of dresses I was most comfortable in. And you know what? I had SO MUCH FUN. No pressure from family or friends, and I could have cared less what the sales associate thought. I totally recommend going by yourself just once to get rid of all of your fears/jitters about dress shopping, it was the best thing I did for myself!

Thank you ladies!! You really have made me more optimistic about this whole thing...between the comments here and all of the FMs I've been getting.... It's just so frustrating. I mean, the fact that this is something I need to worry about is insane....As I said to a few of you in FMs, does the industry think that plus sized girls don't get married or something?! Craziness.
I will be sure to let you all know how it all turns out for me. Thanks again for the encouraging words. This community is fantastic

Re: Dress Shopping Panic Attack
hey angel716 your wedding is the day after mine!!
Ok back to on the subject...
I wear a street size 12 and went to a few smaller salons and the 12's were like putting on a pair of stockings made for a 6 yr old.
I found my dress at David's Bridal. Tried on a 12, Breathing was an issue so I ordered a 14. Needs a lil alteration, not much.
Just go, try and feel good about it! I was engaged a year already before I got my dress and with all the stress of planning, the excitement of the wedding kind of got away from me - that was until I found my dress. It was like I was newly engaged all over again
