Dress Shopping...need to vent!

Dress Shopping...need to vent!

So I know I haven't posted much on this site, but I'm constantly on here reading what you other girls have to say and looking for advice. Well I just got back from dress shopping and need to vent!!

SO I finally started dress shopping. I wanted to start early, my wedding is Sept. '08. I just got back and I'm SO dissapointed. Lets preface this...i'm normally a size 14. By no means a skinny minnie, but for god's sake I should be able to try on a dress!! I told the sales lady that I wanted to try on a modified mermaid style dress. I went to a local bridal shop on sunday and was able to squeeze on a modified mermaid dress and it looked great. So that's the style I am looking for and with LOTS of sparkles!!! So the lady brings me ALL poofy dresses, which...what the hell I gave them a shot and tried them on. I looked terrible! The lady insisted on me trying these horrendous dresses on when all I wanted to try on were the mermaid styles. FINALLY I was able to try on ONE mermaid style and it looked really nice. The only problem was that the rest of the mermaid styles were way too small and I could barely get them over my hips!! GRRRRRRRR Has anyone noticed any sparkly mermaid style dresses anywhere in bigger sizes??

I haven't started looking for dresses yet so I can't be of much help, but I can imagine how stressful trying them on must be and I just wanted to say good luck!

I dont know which stores you went to, but most samples are a size 10 or 12. I got my dress at Bridal Reflections - they have sparkly mermaid dresses but not sure what size the sample would be. Kleinfeld would have a lot too. Good luck!

Try Lillette's in Baldwin and also Beautiful Bride in Lynbrook ... both have samples in *slightly* larger sizes.

I don't know what styles they carry - - if many mermaid or all pouffy but David's has racks for each size with a good 20 or more dresses per rack. Maybe check them. If you go to their website they have selected styles there to see if any are near what you have in mind.

i feel your pain. i have not tried on more than two gowns that 'fit' me. and trust me... those two did not fit.
i am not a size 14 BUT i'm a ddd and i have a thick waist and large hips.
i havent been able to pick a gown and i've been searching for months b/c it's too hard to tell what they'll look like when they FIT ME!!

ugh. i hate gown shopping and i hate the rude people who work in bridal salons who don't listen to what we want.

Alisha at Fantasia Bridal in Rocky Point was GREAT!! I went there on Sunday. She listened to what I wanted, but unfortunately they didn't 'fit'. When I find the gown I want, where ever I find it, I am going to see if they can order it for me. They were wonderful!

I'd reccommend the Wedding Center in Commack, they carry a LOT of plus size dresses there and are supposedly one of the largest on LI.

Or if you can head into the city, RK Bridal. I've heard great things about them.

Just remember, when you find THE dress, you should price shop to get the best deal.

Klienfeld & RK Bridals. I got mine in Klienfeld & they were amazing If you do go to RK, it will be a lot eaier for you if you have a copy of the dress you wanted so that you can show it to the person helping you (that's how I did my BM's dresses). Goodluck!

II am a street 14 most of the modified or slim alines couldn't go all the way down on me. Most of the time it was bunched up on my waist and the other half couldn't fit at all. What they did is unzip it and then held it up to me and pulled it back for me to get an idea.

I really don't know where they would have it - i think most plus size shops don't have that style but you can shop it and the dress might swim on you. I know estelles had a few dresses in 14-16's and two mermaids - slim a-lines if you want to try there.

My dress is a slim a line and it was scrunched up by my waist but i knew it would work. I also did what i mentioned above open it up and hold it up against me and kinda made it look like it fitted me to get the picture.

Thanks for the advice! I tried holding the dresses up to me...but I was so dissapointed I couldnt see what it would really look like. I think I'm gonna try Estelle's next and then another local bridal shop that supposidly has bigger sample sizes in the mermaid styes. BTW your dress is gorgeous!!

I went dress shopping once and was so humiliated that I havent since but have no choice now because of time. I brought pics of gowns I wanted to try on and they showed me everything but. Then the girl told me for my build(overweight)that these styles where better suited for me. I hated everything but one but then they wouldnt even tell me who made the dress so I just went home.

Where did they not tell you who made the dress...just curious so I know not to go there!

Go to Elena's Bridal Couture in Merrick on Merrick Ave.
I am looking for the exact same style mermaid and I wear a size 10. The dresses they have a special guide in them so that they can fit anyone fit sizes 1 to 28.

The women were so sweet there.

I tell you I can feel your pain with the trying on dresses though - some dresses I can't even get over my hips. Since when is having curves a bad thing.....since samples are like size 6! :(

Back to the gym I go lol.

You can try Paradise Bridal in Patchogue also. Loved them. Ask for Elaine , she is great... She was soo much help. I made the mistake of going to David's Bridal, and since their dresses run two sizes small... and the dresses they have to try on are all 6's, that would have to make us a 4 to even try them on. ( Which I haven't been since the 4th grade) And the dresses that did fit over there, were off the rack and if it fit, they made you take that one..they wouldn't order it. I also wasn't comfortable with an 18 yr old helping me pick my wedding dress. I was sooo stressed until I went to Paradise and met Elaine. Good luck...

If you cant find exactly what you are looking for you can also try having a dress maker whip something up. I got my dress from Elana's in Merrick, I had orriginally gone there to have them recreate a dress that I had seen, with some modifications, but they happened to have a dress i fell in love with so i went with that instead. They are beyond helpful there so its worth a shot. http://www.elenabridal.com/

Thanks, I went to estelles, I don't know do me their dresses seemed very poorly made and cheap fabric. However MOB had a good section and maybe you can just try on the style dress you want to see how it looks on you.
