I couldn't find the answer to this online, but is there a law about where you need to stop at a stop sign? Can you legally stop a foot in front of the sign? Two feet, as long as all other roads/stops are visible?

around here u have to stop at stop signs otherwise u get tickets, if you dont' stop and the other person doesnt' stop then what? boom. IMO if you cant' see everything you stop and then inch forward to see the signs. sorry don't know your situation but that's my take on it.

No. The whole point of the stop sign is to stop BEFORE the sign itself. Usually at least two feet before the sign.
Any stop after that can warrant a ticket.

Here's the situation...I stopped about a foot before the sign, and could see all the other signs. The cop was hiding and would only have seen me if I stopped at or after the sign, which I did not. I did take pictures from where he was hiding to prove it, but I am afraid he will lie and say he was closer.

I think the fact that you are fighting it, and have thought to take the pictures will help to prove that you were in the right. I would think that someone who doesn't stop at a stop sign wouldn't bother to fight it!
