Has anyone ever been to a reception where there was no alcohol? Not even a cash bar Just wondering how the party turned out

Re: Dry Reception?
My cousin had one in PA recently! All I can say is it wasnt the party atmosphere that most of us associate with a wedding!

Re: Dry Reception?
After that post it got me thinking....I too went to a dry reception in PA about 15 years ago. I was too young to drink anyway, but I remember my cousins making comments about how its NOT a NY wedding. I mean it was held in like a VFW hall also.....so....
Different environment, probably not as much dancing. Is this what you are considering?

Re: Dry Reception?
I think you would have to compare a dry wedding in NY to a dry wedding in NY. Weddings in other states aren't the same even WITH alcohol!

Re: Dry Reception?
I was at a dry wedding out of state, but all New Yorkers were there and EVERYONE complained all night long and we couldn't believe they didn't even have a cash bar or anything.

Re: Dry Reception?
I've been to weddings where they cut the alcohol about an hour or two before the reception ends. I am considering doing this. Are you doing this to save money or to be a responsible bride? I too am very concerned about how people will travel safely home from my wedding...Considering how some people drink!!!

Re: Dry Reception?
only one, the couple were born again, and did not drink. I was in high school so I did not care much

Re: Dry Reception?
I think when people go to a wedding, especially in NY, they go, expecting to drink party, dance and socialize. I know it would be a huge disappointment to my family if I had no alcohol. Knowing them, they would run out to the store and buy cases of beer to liven things up!!! I couldn't imagine a party without alcohol, in my family!!!

Re: Dry Reception?
i could not imagine what my family would do if i didn't have alcohol. my family loves to drink. i was thinking about shutting down the bar about an hour or so before it ends, so i know people will get home ok.

Re: Dry Reception?
I went to one in North Carolina this summer....what a bummer. The brides' family was very religious...not even a champagne toast!! A bunch of the younger people kept walking back to their cars to put alcohol in their drinks which I thought was rude. It was a quiet party....no one got loud, there wasn't much dancing going on.

Re: Dry Reception?
I went to one last year, and it s ucked!!!! It was in NJ. The reception ended an hour earlier than it should have because everyone was bored.
My FI and my brother were in the parking lot having a few beers. The grandmother of the bride brought a flask of whiskey to sneak. It was pretty ridiculous. No one danced as all.

Re: Dry Reception?
I went to one in Las Vegas, of all places (must have been the only dry room within a 25 mile radius!). Although I had a few martinis in me from a pre-wedding stop at a nearby bar, the lack of alcohol did not seem to bother the majority of the guests. Yes, it was a little strange not having alcohol, but surprisingly the dance floor was still packed all night. The bride and groom were having a great time, and everyone took their cue from them.
So it can work in some instances, but I know it wouldn't with my family.

Re: Dry Reception?
allure - are you considering this??
IMO - if it's done for religious reasons, then i think it is 100% understandable and people need to accept that. if it's done for other reasons, then i would expect a LOT of complaining from folks. as much as i despise cash bars, i would rather have that than a dry reception.
