Dumb Question - about breast feeding

I was watching my nephew this weekend who is bottle fed, and I have to burp him every so often because of the amount of air that he swallows....
If a baby is breast fed, do you still have to burp them?
I know really dumb question

NO question is dumb!!
You typically would burp a breastfeed baby while switching from one breast to the other. Breastfeed babies do not swallow air like with bottle feed babies. You cannot get gas bubbles in your breasts so that helps a lot.

Thank you Michele!!! I was worried no one would answer because its kind of a silly question.
I have been researching breastfeeding lately and I figured there would be no way for air to enter the baby's stomach...

I remember trying to burp Emma when she was really small but it was useless because she would rarely burp. She was strictly BF. When she DID get air in her stomach she would squirm so I knew to burp her, otherwise she was a virtually burpless child.

You should get yourself A Nursing Mother's Companion Guide and if you plan on going back to work Nursing Mother/Working Mother.

I found both of those books very helpful.

Re: Dumb Question - about breast feeding

For the first two months my son was BF and then we weaned up until 3 months. He had to be burped just as often with as BF as he does with FF, only now I know if after a certain amount of ounces before it was by my watch.

He was getting air somehow, he is one gassy child.
