My mom, MOH and I were arguing (it got ugly) with my seamstress b/c when I walked in my gown at my first fitting (which they at first discouraged out of fear it would get dirty - but I'm not going to be standing on a pedistal not moving at the wedding), they front of the dress tucked under itself as I walked. That would be too long - right? It has detail on the bottom in the front and on the sides... after a few steps the detail was tucking under quite a bit... I don't want it too short either though. I ended up buying a new slip so that Macy's would steam it for me so that it will lay flat. I'm a little concerned, but I've heard stories about alterations not working out well. Some get the dress too short and my MOH said her's was too long and she was quite unhappy about it the day of the wedding. I mean, in the mirror it looked like the dress was being dragged... I expect a little of that on the sides b/c of the train... but it was a little much...

Re: Dumb question - how long should your gown be?
I can't give you a specific length b/c I don't know the actual length a dress should be but it sounds to me that if you have detail on the bottom, you definitely want it to show so you might want to take the dress up a bit. It also depends on your shoes: are you wearing 3-4 inches or 1.5-2 inches? What did the seamstress say before the ugliness?

Re: Dumb question - how long should your gown be?
She said 'OH IT'S BEAUTIFUL' and disappeared. When she came back she just told us how she has 30 years of doing this kind of work and then told me I wasn't listening to her. I then broke out in hives and started hyperventilating and crying at the same time... this was my THIRD 1st fitting mind you b/c the last 2 times they told me 'beautiful' and started unzipping my dress off of me while I was trying to talk to them about how I didn't like the bustline. We fixed the bustline issue - she's sewing some cups into my bra to add additional support - I'm kind of between a C and B cup so I'd really probably benefit from a custom made bra- but they are expensive, but the seamstress stuffed some cups into it and it looked like the $10k boob job/lift I need.
Then my MOH was looking at the dress and she told me to try walking in it... the seamstress didn't want me to saying we'd get the dress dirty, my MOH rolled her eyes and said 'WALK!'. Sure enough, even with my 3 inch or so heals (I forget exactly the height), the dress was dragging and the front came under itself. Granted it's not nice a pressed/steamed the way the dress looks in my profile, but still I don't think it's should be tucking under like that. Plus, once it's steamed and the slip under is steamed so that the crinlin isn't tucked under - won't the dress be slightly longer anyway? Wrinkles have to take some off of it - no?
Yeah, it wasn't a nice scene - PS. the hives went away once I calmed down. I hate that once you pay for the gown, they treat you like garbage - I hear that's fairly common practice at most dress places. I mean, the seamstress kept running away!

It should not tuck under especially since you have detailing at the bottom. Length really is personal taste. I've seen a lot of brides who wear gowns where the bottom doesn't touch the floor and there is a little space between the dress. I like my dress to just touch the floor. Your seamstress can raise it up at the waist to make it shorter. Did you order it hollow to hem?

you shouldn't be tripping on it. it should fall so that you can walk comfortably without stepping on the dress.

It should be just under a 1/2 inch off the ground.

I think it's time for you to take the dress somewhere else for alterations!
Sorry this happened to you!

It sounds like you could trip if you were walking at a normal pace....
definitely take it up until it doesn't fold under.....

I am fearing I will have a similar problem because with the 3 inch shoes I was wearing, it fit just perfectly. I think the dress needs to fit, however YOU feel comfortable. You are paying a lot of money for it and you should like it.

where is this where you are getting your alterations? I bought my dress from Macys in Lake grove and don't know if I want to get it altered there.
I think it should be just above the floor.

Definitely have them lift it it is turning under. You do not want that problem or for the bottom of your dress to be ruined. I would contact the place where your dress is when your calm and when they are not super busy. ie opening time on a weekday and talk to her straight about it. If she doesn't seem that interested because you pd already. Start looking for a new seamstress that will accommodate you.

I don't know if I should be posting the seamstress info at this point - she still has my dress. I do promise to add the info to my review after my wedding and unless they redeem themselves by shutting her mouth and making my dress look the way it does in my profile - it's not going to be a positive review at this point. It's just bad customer service... but I hear they all get that way after the final balance is paid in full.
