Re: Dummy Cake

A dummy cake is a cake that has fake layers - it just may be round boxes with icing on it, or something like that.

Re: Dummy Cake

Any bakery should be able to do this for you. The price depends on much hand crafted stuff you have on it. My mom used to charge $2.50 a slice* for a very ornate cake that would have cost $10 a slice if it were a real cake. She would copy designs from Sylvia Weinstock books...

It's a great way to save money - dummy cake and then have them do sheet cakes to cut up and pass out. Plus you can get really creative without having to worry about the cake underneath.

Is it just me? I just think that this does NOT make sense.

Re: Dummy Cake

What I heard is that the first layer is real cake, and the other layers are boxes. The boxes and the real cake are all decorated the same, but you are not paying the extra cost of the cake for the other layers.

well what you do is get a cake that looks beautiful, but is 1/3 the cost, but isnt real. then you get a sheet cake, which is cheaper because it isnt a wedding cake, and that is cut in the back, where no one will know. it saves money in the end.

From What I hear most cakes at halls are Dummy Cakes...

And they just have a huge sheet cake in the back and cut it...

Who knows... Everyone hears different things.

lreigada... Ask Rosilee!

Re: Dummy Cake

I am not sure if my cake had any fake layers. When we did the cake cutting ceremony, we started out on one tier, but ended up cutting from a different tier and it all felt and looked real (imagine if it didn't, duruing the cake ceremony)???

And they gave us the top, so that was real.

Yeah - that is what I believe it is as well. I got the idea from a magazine. I am having a smaller wedding but wanted a big cake, but did not want to pay for all the extra people.

You can make your own it's very easy. Just buy the precut styrofoam at Michaels and decorate it. I use to teach people how to make wedding cakes. You cover the styrofoam in Royal Icing and then decorate it however you want.
You can even buy premade flowers now at chocolate stores if you can't make them

Re: Dummy Cake

most of the time a wedding cake feeds like 75-100 people (standard 3 tier.) so must bakeries send a back-up sheet cake to have enough slices for the guests. The cakes would get too heavy if they made them to feed 200+ people.

Some people opt to have the bakery decorate foam for 2 tiers, and use one portion for the cutting cermony. Then they have several large sheet cakes to slice for the guests.

If money is tight, option 2 may be a good idea. seconds after we cut out cake, they rolled it into the back. When everyone is up & dancing they place the sliced pieces on the place settings.

Good luck
