I'm not bashing the Church, in fact I hate that, but does anyone know the actualy reason we have to get a duplicate certificate if we have the origional?

Nope. I'm just curious why they don't want the origional.

They have every right to do it, I'll do whatever they want me to...I'm going to ask the priest

Well if I am not mistaken, the church you got baptized at needs to keep the original and you should have one as well where you perform your rite of marriage.
Let me tell you it is a pain if your church doesn't have a copy of your baptismal record - My FH's church was lazy in their record keeping so it's been a hassle and a half to go to a family member who was there, get a letter notarized, etc...
This will also be good for generations to come after you... They will be able to find historical records on your baptism, marriage, etc.

It's because they want to make sure it's the one the church has kept and updated. WHY?
Because if you had been married before, the church would have marked this on their copy. your original would not have this.
That's why they need the duplicate one from the actual church.
HTH!

It needs to be this recent because they need to make sure you were never married before. If you were married before and not properly anulled, the new marriage would be invalid. There's a reason for everything

I actually have my origional. I was lucky because I just called the Church and she put me on hold for about 2 minutes and came back on to ask if I wanted her to mail it- it was easy. I'm sorry you had to do all that!

That sounds logical but how would that Church know if I was married? Maybe my new Church has to notify the old one?
I'm seriously asking the priest!

Any time you get married within the church it gets recorded on your baptismal certificate.
if you were married outside the church they would not know, though if they suspected that you had been, they might require witnesses stating you had not been

I think that's why you get the notarized letter signed by 2 witnesses, no?
My priest explained that the reason they give you that whole inquisition at the 1st meeting is in case your marriage comes into question either by the Church or a legal entity; the questions on there plus the notarized statements give them all the documentation that would be requested if you file for a divorce or an annulment.

Re: Duplicate Baptismal Cert. check but ??
the 6 month thing for the documents is a lie I gave my certficates to the church like almost 2 years ago and we just met with our priest and he didnt mention anything to us about going to get them again. they probably need the copies so the church always has the originals. Thats what I would think would be the reason.
