how would you test to see if the the fireplace works? we bought the house from contractors and they dont even know if it works

Is this new construction?
If it is new construction- they usually have the fireplace contractor come to 'fire it up' and explain how to use it. Can you find out the name of the fireplace contractor? They should set up the appointment for you but if they don't - you can call yourself. It won't (or shouldn't) cost you anything.

it is not a new construction. it was an old house and they kinda rebuilt the inside. the owners that we bought it from were just contractractors and they have no clue if it works

our engineer made sure they worked. i am not sure how though.

Maybe bring some firewood and a lighter...kidding. Sorry I have no idea. Defintely call and ask your inspector who originally inspected it.
