East of Riverhead?

I had a thought this morning while I was thinking about house hunting. What if we looked out east? I have no idea what towns there really are out there and what schools are good. DH works in Manhattan so would this be too much for him each day? Any thoughts? Thanks.

I think that would be over a 2 hr commute to Manhattan each day. So 4 hours a day of commuting. Not worth it, IMO.

Actually, it would probrably be over two hours a day going back and forth. That's also not taking into account travel time once you are in Penn Station. I live North of Riverhead and it takes me about 35-40 minutes to get to the Ronkonkama station. That's the station I use when I want to go to NYC.

I think the commute would be way too tiring for DH, my commute to work is alittle less than an hour and once I'm married, it'll be about an hour & 15 minutes & I think even that is too long. Sitting on a train for close to two hours, especially at the end of the day when all you want is to be at home is brutal!

Riverhead to Penn is a two hour commute. Plus the commute time on the subway.

Not for the weak of heart. Ive done it quite a few times when I was dating my FW and she was still living out in Riverhead.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I guess it would be too much for DH. I just really want something affordable in a nice area where he can still commute into Manhattan. I know there is no such thing but I am a wishful thinker.

I remember when I used to travel by train from my house in Hampton Bays to my house in Brooklyn it would take me close to 3 hours door to door.

Definently too far of a commute.

Wow, DH would definitely not like that at all. He wants to remain at about an hour commute each way but anything in that area is too expensive.

Is there anything in NJ that is affordable that is within an hour or so from NYC?

It also depends on where he works. For me I work by the 59th street bridge. Major pain in the *** to get there from Penn... adds another 15 minutes each way at least.

If he works by Penn... might not be too bad.

If he works downtown (WallSt area)... look into NJ because you can just take the PATH train there.

He works about 14 blocks from Penn. He walks it every day.

Then it might not be that bad. If I had that option... I would be more willing to check out Suffolk Long Island.

But for now when it comes time to look... will probably be NJ.

I would like to stay around 350K if possible, pref less of course.
