EASTER VENT (if you're highly sensitive to your beliefs don't bother reading)

EASTER VENT (if you're highly sensitive to your beliefs don't bother reading)

I just HAVE to vent, sorry!

I’m SO glad this Holiday Season is almost over!!
No offense to anyone but this is a very taxing season for me. Being Agnostic means I normally feel I am not qualified to judge others on their beliefs since I feel no one REALLY knows the whole story well enough to make an absolute judgement on faith or religion itself.

That being said, this time is so very heavily religious in nature. MORE so that xmas, I think. Xmas is just a commercialized fanfare. Easter is so ‘deep’ for some folks. Not just one faith but lots of them. So much going on about now. And, unlike xmas, it’s not just a build up for one special day, it’s a seasonal thing. It’s a long and drawn out event.

Keeping my mouth shut is my own form of lent if you will. This is tough!

Even now, there’s so much I want to ask and prod and question about. Still, I know that no matter how I word it or how much I say “I’m just curious” no one will take it that way and I’ll be the one crucified. I hate going out in public (other than the steak house) during this time.

Even at the office all I hear is “Happy Easter” blah blah Any big plans of the holiday weekend? (which we don’t even get a day off for hehe) So, Veronica, are you ‘doing Easter’ at your house or someone elses?

“Do Easter”? As if this is some social event? When I say “uhm, no” and they ask what that means (some do). What am I to say? My line for this year is “I’m sorry but I’m Agnostic and Easter just isn’t a big deal for me” Some still don’t get it. “Oh so you aren’t religious (WRONG) but what about his family aren’t you going to sit and eat with them?” What’s so hard to understand? This holiday just rubs me the wrong way, along with xmas. This one is just worse cause it lasts longer!!!

Only other holiday that’s worse than this one is Thanksgiving, but at least THEN I get a chance to see Football on TV. With Easter all I get is Jesus, Moses and other religious stories on TV. It’s SOOO Annoying! Not even cute Rudolph or something amusing. Can’t we at least have BUNNY stories ore something?? Instead every time I flip the channel I see a person whipped, chained or hung. Oh joyous of seasons!

Sorry.. bah.. I’m being bad.

Just HAD to vent!

whew.. feels good to type that out! I hope I didnt pin point any one religion or faith in my rant. I mean it's just that I feel SO much in the minority. It's frustrating.

Even though I don't agree with your point of view, I'll defend your right to say it. I have a hard time digesting this last line, you may be Agnostic, but Easter season is when Catholics, such as myself, remember what Jesus went through. I know there are a lot of movies about it on now, but that is because it is what Easter is all about. The suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus. Just because you either don't believe it or don't understand it, is no reason to make such a sarcastic remark. And don't say in your subject post for people not to read it, because we can and we will defend our beliefs, the same way you are defending yours. I am not highly sensitive to my religion, i just want to give you another point of view. No harm meant.

No harm taken.
You are more than welcome to disagree with me. It was meant sarcastically but honestly it was meant truthfully. Jim & I turned on the TV to find our favorite show replaced by the story of Moses.. when I first got there someone was chained. Caught me off guard. Then later I flip around and see a bloody mess which is supposed to be Jesus.

It's not just a catholic thing.. I feel its more a Christian thing in general.

Still it's offensive to me to have to see it as Im flipping through to find a comedy. Does that mean I am being sarcastic with that remark.....? I guess so, but honestly it was me venting and honestly it *DOES* feel like every channel has some torture or another to celebrate. If you look at it from my point of view it's errr 'different'.

Still no harm taken.. just thought I'd explain.

I knew fully well people would come in here to 'defend' their religious beliefs. Odd thing is.. they've been doing that most of my life to me. I never DOUBT your beliefs. I never DOUBT your faith. ('your' being figuratively speaking) Im the last person you need to 'justify' or 'prove' or 'convince' I feel each is due their own faith.

I've used to passionately defend my beliefs until I realized my beliefs are my own, personal and can not be swayed so easily. If that's me then the same is true for others. No amount of preaching, proving or explaning can make others understand what one finds to be 'faith' or 'religious'.

Folks may come in here saying Im 'wrong' or its 'not right' or 'unfair'. I know to myself, it doesnt matter. I know I am right because I am right with myself and my beliefs. You and all those out there are right with their own beliefs as well. Just doesnt mean I can't express my frustration.

If I came of as preachy, I apologize. Lord knows i am not the most devout Catholic (no pun intended) I never meant to say that you are wrong and only what i believe is right, because i know that is not true, i don't believe one set of beliefs is for everyone. and i didn't mean to imply that you can't vent your frustrations. we all do on here, about work, weddings, FMIL's, etc...i just think that to post a vent about a specific holiday, easter, passover, kwanzza...and then tell people NOT to read it if you are sensitive to your faith, is kind of sketchy. you are entitlted to your own thoughts and opinions, but don't tell people not to read it. I say we agree to disagree. What do you say?

I never meant to sound defensive.
Im just glad to air out the insanity of it all

so we dont actually disagree to much..

But.. I'll agree to agree and disagree with which ever I agree or disagree to

It's funny, I had to say something here cuz I understand how you feel. I am Catholic and pretty religous. My two younger sister's, however are agnostic. They feel the way you do and it always seems that people have to get into 'arguments' with them so as to make them understand a religion. I feel that you should believe what you want to believe. If it's nothing, fine, that is your choice. It's not like there is a whole lot of evidence that things like The Bible are true anyway. We obviously know that Genesis didn't really happen that way. Live and let live is all. It's kind of hard right now for those who are agnostic, but at least you can revel in the chocolate.

I didn't mean that we disagree, just that we have different points of view and that is that.

my dad and stepmom are Baptist ministers, and i'm agnostic. when i told them i don't want Jesus mentioned in our ceremony my stepmother became so judgemental. Like 'i can't believe that!!! then what do you plan on having for reading?'. very christian of her. There are plenty readings that aren't about Jesus.
I told her its a nice storybook with some good lessons in it, but a lot of it is fiction. I thought she was going to crucify me!!!

but my dad is very supportive and likes to hear my beliefs and ideas, and never tries to shove religion down my throat. He respects my beliefs. and i do have beliefs... just different ones.

Thank god i'm marrying a non religious Jew.

Again, I will defend your right to say what you want, but to say the Bible is fiction is just outright offensive. say that you don't belive it and i will leave you alone. jack and jill is a nice storybook with a good lesson to it. do you understand what i am trying to say. be a little more understanding about the things you post on here, keep in mind that people will disagree with you.

Although we both agree on freedom of speech I must just say this.

You too can offend 'us' who dont agree with your faith.

To tell me that, that book is without fiction and is ultimately the truth so said God, is very offense to me. (not that you meant to offend and I realize that, but it could be) Because that is saying we are 'wrong' to believe that the bible is useful but not completely truthful. That is not the root of my beliefs but it is one of the major ones.

It is, however, socially acceptable to tell us, the minority, that the bible is not fictional no matter what we say. Even though you can not prove each word factual.

I think it should be left at the fact that we both can agree it does have it's good points.

And we can agree to disagree it's factuality.

Anything said about religion can be construed to be offense to one person or another.

to all and in their faith may they be true.

Jesus will be mentioned in our services but not in direct relation to the audience. There is no 'let us pray' and there's a part where he asks the audience to help us in our committment to eachother (not a commitment to God or Jesus and I took out the part where he asks the audience to say God) I have a problem with forcing religion on anyone including those who go to my wedding.

PS: would LOVE to hear some of the reading you know of. I was gonna be lazy and do none!

My dad's really supportive too. We have deep and long talks for hours and hours about religions it's so refreshing.

Im married to a sorta Agnostic or as he says 'A convenient christian'

It sounds more like smm2675 is asking for the bible to be respected. She did not ask for any one to believe every word written and clearly states that no one has to believe in the bible.

Re: EASTER VENT (if you're highly sensitive to your beliefs don't bother reading)

We are not very religious but we do acknowledge our religions (me - Episcopalian, DH - Jewish). With that said, I look at these holidays (Passover and Easter) as a time to spend with family. We are both fortunate to have families that are pleasant to be around with, so we don't mind visiting them and having a large meal. I personally don't find Easter to be a seasonal thing, but maybe because I don't hear about it as much as you do. Christmas, on the other hand, is soooo commercialized that I believe the meaning behind it is lost. I happen to like Easter for several reasons, some of them very superficial: there is a sense of renewal, and for me, it's spring; as I mentioned before, it is time that I can spend with my family; and, as a teacher, I do get a vacation (that's my superficial reason).

It annoys me to read in your post, Veronica, that people you work with assume you celebrate Easter. I can't believe you were questioned when you told people that you do not celebrate Easter. I know quite a few people, including my DH, who do not celebrate Easter because it is not part of their religion.

I would like to add one thing that annoys ME, and that would be people looking at me like I have ten heads when I am eating chicken on Good Friday. YOU DON'T KNOW ME OR MY RELIGION, WHO ARE YOU TO COMMENT THAT IT'S GOOD FRIDAY? Ok, I just felt this was a good place to get that off my chest. Thanks.

sorry you find it offensive, but they are my beliefs and i have a right to voice them!!! should Jews not state that they don't believe Jesus was the messiah??? that is their belief, one that many Christians believe they are going to hell for, but they have every right to say it!!! i'm not asking for anyone to agree with me.

many points of the bible have been historically proven to be false, but god forbid I say it. whats the difference??? i'm not making these statements off the top of my head... ive taken theology classes and have studied the history of the bible. so its not like im talking out of my butt here.

and i do respect the bible, i just don't think its pure fact. and what i meant by a nice storybook, is that it is a not truly fictional book of good lessons and morals that everyone can learn from. thats all i was saying.

I dont find it disrespectful to say that the book is useful but fictional.

Thanksgiving: My family is American Indian

But people that believe in the bible may find it disrepectful to call it fiction. I wouldn't generalize or catagorize ANY religious writings as fiction - James Patterson is fiction. IMO, it's not anywhere near the same thing.
