Re: Ebay Scam

Wow. Thanks for the heads up. I got one of those emails recently, about something I bid on how someone else can offer it to me for a better price.

Agreed, here is something I thought was helpful from the article though:

There are many warning signs in Kenneth’s behavior which should send out red flags to consumers, according to eBay. The primary one: a desire to take the transaction out of the eBay system, company spokesman Pursglove said. When anyone approaches an auction bidder and recommends a private sale, promising cheaper prices that circumvent eBay fees, eBay uses should be wary, he said.

Re: Ebay Scam

I had a similar thing happen to me with PayPal. I got an authentic looking email from them, requiring me to log in and change my password (I had received legitimate emails like this in the past). Lo and behold, the email that looked EXACTLY like it had come from PayPal, which took me to a web page EXACTLY like PayPal's, was generated by someone who subsequently transferred all the money in my checking account to himself. He started with my first credit card on the account (which was a debit card for a defunct, but open bank account), and when he couldn't get anything further from that (no money was actually transferred because there was nothing in the account, but that didn't go through until a day or two later), he went on to my secondary card on file...my debit card for my active checking account, and wiped me out completely. It was my first day at work, I had just sent out my rent check, and my car died 4 days later - it nearly destroyed me. Luckily, I was able to get the money back from my bank, but the hoops I had to jump through to get it were ridiculous. I didn't get a new debit card for a month and didn't get my money back for 3 months, so please, PLEASE, be careful out there.

The worst part of all: even though they had the email address and name of the person who supposedly robbed me, they rarely, if ever, prosecute, because it's nearly impossible to prove that the person whose name the email and PayPal account is under was actually the person sitting at the computer stealing the money!

There was a huge article about this about a month or two after I was robbed, stating that this happened to hundreds, if not thousands of people, and apparently, I was among the first. It's despicable what people will do for a quick buck.
