electric fence?

electric fence?

Does anybody have this for the dog? We can't fence in our yard. The way it's set up, it would slice the yard in half and look really bad and on top of that, my husband won't spring for the six grand it would cost . (which I understand)

We were going to just get a pen for her , but my trainer told me that she won't poop in there because she'll consider it a den. UGH. My trainer said to definitely go w. the electric fence. And he is extremely reputable. He said the buzz she gets - she'll only get once or twice and then she'll never try to pass it again. I dont' know though..the thought of her ever getting buzzed upsets me.

I am so concerned with all this. I have to get something so the dog can go out alone. I can't be walking her all day when the baby gets here. I dont' have anybody around to help and I am going to be doing it on my own!

Any suggestions or experience?

Re: electric fence?

I know my uncle had one and it worked wonders...and his daughter is an animal rights activist...so I'm sure she would not have let him hear the end of it if it was cruel...

I will comment though...When I ran on the roads for cross-country in HS there were these 2 pitbulls that looked so GD mean and everytime we ran by them they would take off after us...no fence...and still in the 4 years that I was involved...I still thought they were going to break through....

so if your dog is mean looking...be aware...it can still scare the bejeezus out of someone

With big dogs sometimes it doesnt work that well.

Jenny,

We have it for our dog and so far it it works great. The collar gives a warning beep to warn the dog that they are nearing their boundary. I will admit I was heartbroken when she got shocked..

Re: electric fence?

I just went through this, as we are buying a new house and need to have a backyard containment system for our big baby (aka my dog, Onyx). He is a black lab, and they are pretty smart so they usually learn after one or two shocks to stay away from the fence. That said, our breeder, who works w. dogs all the time, told me he does not recommend the electric fence because it can have an adverse affect on dogs- he has seen dogs get so freaked by the shock that they refuse to go out into the yard at all.

if you do get one, keep in mind that the dog collars w. electric fences run on batteries- , make sure you have one that beeps when the battery is low. Otherwise, the collar can go out when the batteries die, and you would not know, and the dog can go right through where the fence is. I think depending on the size of the dog, they can probably be trained to stay within the fence. I would also call and ask your vet, they know your dog and can probably tell you if it will work for him. Good luck!

Re: electric fence?

it's such a hard decision. our dog is little - i heard it doesn't work great with bigger dogs sometimes becuase they dont' care about the shock and just plunge right through! our trainer said to expect two times at the most that little abbey would get buzzed...i just hate the thought of her ever getting hurt...

but then i think of the dead of February - I am alone here all day, the baby is crying and the dog needs to go out. I am afraid I won't have any choice....
