Electric Heat - need info!!

If you or someone you know has electric heat, what can you tell me about cost in comparison to oil or gas heat? Is it more expensive?

Wouldn't your electric bill be INSANE in this case?

Re: Electric Heat - need info!!

We put in a bid on a townhouse that was accepted and they have electric heat. I spoke with LIPA and found out that electric is the most expensive way to heat a home, but it’s not significant. She gave me the owners bills from 2005 and it’s wasn’t “too” bad. She also gave me the #’s from 2 other units in the development. one was the same as ours and one was lower.

Just trying to find out what I can about it.

Make sure the units are the same size. One two and three bedrooms will have significant differences in cost.

we have it in one room at my dad's house- it was an addition

I think it's expensive b/c my dad is always turning the heat off in there and it's freezing!

but when you turn the heat on- it comes on quick and hot!

but on the bright side you wont have to buy oil-

and maybe you can get on the budge plan from LIPA

We have electric everything, including heat (but we live in VA and its really really common). It works great except in weather below 25 degrees. We have a 1300 sq ft 2 level townhouse with top of the line windows and insulation. Our highest bill has only been $95 a month (no budget plan). Luckily it hasn't been that cold this winter and we keep the house relatively cold.

wow! $95? that seems very reasonable. the rates in NY are probably the highest the country (of course! ) your townhouse sounds like a similar size one we put a bid on.

do you have more than 1 thermostat?

$200 per month...
for 1100 sq ft 2 bedroom coop

however, this includes all
electric stove, hot water heater...

we have themostats in each room.
we use them spareingly and only 3 different rooms, (we havn't touch the temp in 3 other zones)

our bill should be lower however we electric hogs with our 12 computers running, tv's etc...

from my understanding, its very good considering cost of oil/gas etc...

wow! that's not bad at all! we're paying $175 a month right now for both electric & gas heat in a 1 bedroom apt! (we're on a budget plan however - we pay the same amount every month). thanks for the info!
