Elizabeth Arden Red Door Salon – Garden City – FREE for all (my Saturday drama)

Ok, so I had an appt to go out and have my brows done. I called the number given online and they made me an appt ($30) for 9am on Saturday. I drove out there (on Franklin Ave across from Saks) only to find out it’s very much not open yet (under construction). They tell me to ‘go next door to Saks’. I walk over and find THEY don’t open until 10am.

I am NOT a happy camper, I wanted my brows done for my bach party and it’s close enough to the wedding. Was even going to get them to blow my hair out. So I waited.

Closer to 10am a couple black clad girls walk up and they’re from the salon, they take me with them but they are the hair girls. So I ask for the blow out they say sure, but not until their ‘trainer’ gets there. Trainer?

The also tell me the brow lady and whole spa folks aren’t in on Saturdays. Wait, but I made an appt!!! Oh well, I give up, just gimme a blow out. I ask how long she had been doing this (remember the word trainer) she says about a year or more. Most of the girls there had been at other salons. They were learning the ‘Red Door’ way. Had exams both written and real trials to pass to be ‘accepted’.

A blow dry isn’t rocket science, but with my hair it’s a TEDIOUS long process. So I went for it.

Found out I can’t pay. Even if I wanted to, they have no machines set up. They aren’t accepting payments, it’s all FREE! So are the massages and spa! All of them are in the ‘training’ process for acceptance. They only get tips.

The ‘trainer’ guy arrives, some big cheese from Chicago. Who is like those guys you see on TV flipping my hair this way and that, shaking it out, checking out the tips (I had a trim 2 weeks ago) and tell me my face shape and prefect cut as well as advising carmel color if I ever decide to do highlights. This guy KNOWS his business!

Next thing I know one of the girls comes over and tells me a spa lady came in for a friend, she told her my dilemma and she agreed to do my brows. So after my hair was blown out, curled at the tips and set, I waited about 45mins for the brow lady.

I got my brows done, a mini-facial (I was running out of time) and her cell number. They’ll be open for another two weeks for free services, you just need to call and make appts. The catch is it’s only during the day. But I got a blow out, brows and facial for $20 tip ($10 each).

Then I went out on my bach party!

I found out they’re looking for ‘Bob’ cuts especially. They’re required to do one of each, long, long layered, short, short layered, bob, graduated bob, etc.

The number is 516-248-9000 Ask for Lindsay or Nikki. The appt times are 10am – 12p, Thursday and Friday.

Is there a website? Do you know what services they have? I JUST got my brows done...
