Eloping before the wedding - a la paul and jamie buchman

FH and I have been toying with the idea of pulling a Paul and Jamie Buchman (from Mad About You) and getting married before the wedding - just the 2 of us. We'd still have the wedding, but we'd also have a small something that is ours and ours alone. I'm curious what you all think about this idea.

I wanted to do that sooooooo bad! Is your wedding over a year away that you could have the same date? If you BOTH want to, I say go for it (but still have your wedding w/ all your friends and family)

My firend did this, but for insurance reason, and they ahd a baby together, but if you want to go for it.

Do you think you will be able to keep it a secret, my friend couldn't!!!

I love it! I'm not sure I could do it, but I love it.

In some ways, a wedding can become so impersonal and more about the larger group than it is about the couple.

If you do it, just decide if it will be your secret or if you will tell everyone at a later date. And if you do tell, be prepared for some sharp tongues!

FI and I were talking about that, but doing it a couple of months before in Jamaica or someplace like that. We decided not to because people would probably found out anyway, especially the MOH and Best Man, when they discover that there is no marriage certificate to sign at the ceremony/reception. I have read that guests were upset when they heard that couples whose weddings they attended did this because they felt these couples were having a reception just to get the gifts.

JMO

Edited to say: I think it is a romantice idea, but your wedding guests may have a different opinion.

I never even thought of the marriage certificate issue.....hmm...

Maybe I could find Lyle Lovett in a manhole and we could do it with no paperwork! LOL!!

We were planning on not eloping but having our ceremony at disney just us (FI's favorite place) and then having a reception party when we got back but it did not go over to well with the family at all. So we nixed that idea and we'll have a destination vow renewal in the future.

I do though think its a very romantic idea.

would you tell your best friends about it if you did it? I don't know if that is the best idea... why do you want to do it? Would your wedding be any smaller? I hope not, because I am looking forward to it. When would your anniversary be, Meg?

FH totally wanted to do that and we almost did except I was afraid we wouldn't do the whole wedding thing after, like we're doing now so we didn't. But its a great idea!

FH and I were thinking of doing that too. We wanted to get married and it be just us. We haven't ruled it out yet. I told him if we do it, we can not tell a soul for at least 5 years. My mom would kill me. I say go for it !!!!!

We almost did that in 1999!!! I was working two jobs because I needed benefits, and they began at 6 months, so we he gave me 24 hours to make a decision. I would do it in a minute. We might still have to do it if Verizon goes onj strike and they lose their benefits.
