I would like to buy an embosser with a monogram. I noticed that many are of one initial only, and that there are hand embossers and more sturdy looking desk embossers. Does anyone have a recommendation? Thanks!

Re: Embosser recommendation?
The hand one is a bit more practical if you are going to use it occassionally since its cheaper and much smaller.
If you are going to use it all the time, the desk one is easier to use but is more difficult to store.
Either way, make sure the one you get has the ability to switch plates in case you want to get another plate for another purpose.
Just curious - are you getting one in Bklyn? Ive gotten custom plates before at Papyrus (in the WTC) but havent gotten a new one since getting married.

Re: Embosser recommendation?
I have a follow up question about embossers, since I was toying with getting one. I've seen them used, but almost every time I've gotten something in the US mail with embossing, the paper looks torn. Does this happen often, or is it the quality of the paper that is being used? I don't want to buy the embosser and then never use it b/c it tears the paper!

I have used them a lot and they dont tear the paper - or they shouldnt. THe only time it tears the paper is when the seal is uneven so to get the image to show, you have to press so hard on one side that it tears the other. I have one seal like and its a pain but oh well.
You should be able to use it on any type of paper except really really thin paper like tissue. Since you control the pressure, you just use a lighter touch on the lighter papers.

Re: Embosser recommendation?
I have a hand embosser, and I have two plates, one with a monogram, and one with my initial. I don't remember exactly where I bought it from, I searched online, and ordered the cheapest I could find. As for Claud's question, I have found that if I press too hard on paper that is too thin, printer paper for instance, sometimes the design will tear. Once I got a hang of using it though, I haven't torn even the thinnest of paper.

Hi Stef! I am looking on-line b/c I moved to Kings Park, so I'm less available for city-shopping (since my day is all about work and commuting).
I saw a hand embosser at marthstewart.com, for $69 it comes with 3 plates. I think I will put it on my Christmas list!
Good ques re: paper tearing. Thanks for the tips.

i have one but need a new plate to update with our new address. I love it. I never had a torn paper problem either. If you really press too hard on delicate paper that can happen though.

Clueless: Have you found anything online? THe Martha ones are cool but very overpriced.
