Embossing newbie

Hi!

I'm pretty crafty but have never done embossing. Is there a 'starter kit' someone can recommend? Or what tools (brand/type) do you like best? Where can I get them?

There wasn't a big selection at all in Michaels so I was looking on amazon for ideas but they don't give details about anything they sell so I have no clue what they are actually giving me.

I've found e-how DIY directions so all I know is i need stamps, ink, powder and some sort of heat tool!!
Sorry I'm clueless.

Also, is there anywhere you know to get a custom stamp made?

Thanks so much for any help you can give!

Ironically enough if you look at the previous post on the stamping class, The Ink Pad has all the info on their website for you:
www.theinkpadnyc.com

They have a lot of links where you can find more information. Don't be afraid to call them as well.

I know, they created customs stamps for my sister's photography business. They did a great job. They are creating a return address stamp for me for my wedding invitations. Prices generally relate to the size of the stamp created. The info is also on their website.

Enjoy!

I saw that post, When I thought of stamping I wasn't thinking that it was embossing as well!! I was thinking Stamp and Ink, no raised paper or anything fancy. Warned you that I'm clueless!

Thanks, Maybe I'll sign up or see if there are any other classes like it.

Well, it is different but there are ways to create an embossed look from stamping using powder on the stamped ink. And they would be able to point you in the right direction to local classes and product vendors.

You could also try the classes at SVA.

You can buy the heat tool at AC Moore or Michaels or even Joanns (and use a coupon)- ask them there -

You can also buy the powders, they have a lot of powders in the AC Moore on Glen Cove Road.

Sorry, I didnt realize you needed more info. There really is no reason to take a class on this stuff. I will do a little tutorial with pics for you if you want.

You will need a stamp, ink pad (i like Emboss It because its clear and then doesnt matter what kind of embossing powder you use), embossing powder, and the heat tool.

DEFINITELY use CLEAR embossing powder - otherwise you'll see little specks of it outside of your stamped design. It's pretty fool-proof if you use the clear.

Re: Embossing newbie

Thanks for all the help!

I was actually able to figure it out on my own and at one point put up another post showing what I did. The pics of my invites are in the 'done it ourselves' album if anyone is interested.

I've done only one invite so far as 'practice' and to get all my ideas in a visual state, but I have the main pocketfold done, the invite and the rsvp card so far. I'm gonna eventually do directions and hotel info once that's all straightened out.

Thanks again
