enagement gifts

Hi - I'm not good with this since I didn't have an engagement party. What is a good gift for an engagement party if they aren't registered yet?? What did you guys get that you thought was a great gift??

That's what I do too (or something off the registry if there is one).

Technically, you are not required to give an engagement gift at all so I'd rather not give money.

I would say $50pp but if you want to be extra generous you could give more.

Thanks. I was looking to do something other than money. I wanted to be a little creative. I'm just not a big fan of giving money for the engagement gift.

some people gave us registry items, some $$ (ranged from $25-$300) and some just gave little things they thought would be helpful...kitchen gadgets, heart-felt items (a calendar from 1979...when FH was born) and other things like that. one family member gave us a really adorable set of frames from restoration hardware.

i think anything goes. the people who gave a lot of $$$ were older relatives who have deeper pockets.

I got a wine rack, wine bottles, wine glasses, picture frames, photo albums, decorative goblets, some kitchen gadgets, and Money (mostly money). It all depends on the couple too - what are they into? Can you leverage that into a gift?

In Things Remembered they have those throw blankets that you can have embroidered with the couples name/date/saying whatever you want.. I have one and I love it...

I try to stay away from frames cause I know many people give those already

gift certificates are always helpful

How about a Spa treatment for the couple...
or a nice dinner gift cert. (when planning a wedding we can go broke- so going out is a nice treat)

i dont think its tacky to not register. in fact i have heard just the opposite. your actually not sopposed to expect a gift for engagement but we eneded up getting money from most people. also got some wine, alcohol bottles, picture frames. the standard amount from a couple was 100. Our friends were very generouse. you could also make a basket with all wedding stuff.

ok, well, I'm a compulsive registry checker, and our engagement party invites went out last week and people have started to buy gifts...

so far people have gotten: a pair of toasting glasses, some of our flatware, some of our everyday dishes, a spice rack, and a dustbuster.

the dustbuster seems to me like the most random one... I mean, of all the things on there in that price range, why pick the dustbuster? But I'm not complaining. We have a lot of pets, so we need all the cleaning help we can get There' s just a nice foot-massager bath that's around the same price....

Anyway, I know you said that there's no registry, but maybe that will give you an idea of the kind of things people are getting... most of the gifts seem to be around $50, the most expensive is about $100, the least expensive around $20 - although I don't know if one person bought all 4 sets of everyday dishes, or a few people did.... My registry has a whole range from just a couple of dollars to several hundred dollars, so that low/middle range seems to be where people are heading for the e-party.

Thanks - I love the ideas. The one that I would probably love is the restaurant GC, just because with all the saving, we kind of feel guilty going out to dinner. I might go with that one. They were all great ideas though. Thanks so much!!

You could always do a gift card to BBB or Fortunoff? I think Tiffany Candle sticks are a nice idea, they will have them forever and they are about 100 per pair, depending on which ones you get. FH don't currently live together, we got a lot of household items from our registry and a few keepsake things.
