money is always a safe option because afterall they are planning a wedding and it will come in handy...but if money isn't your thing, i always think about buying something like a really nice picture frame with room for a picture or two and an invitation...lenox makes nice ones...or possibly a cake cutter and server or toasting flutes, potentially engraved with dates if they set a date for the wedding already...or wine with a personalized label

Some things we really liked from our e-parties before we registered - toasting flutes, cake cutting set, panini maker and random crystal.

Money is always safe.
We sometimes will give toasting flutes, cake cutting/serving set so the couple can use them at their wedding.

I personally would not want anything unique. I say cash is really the only option for an engagement party.
