Engagement Gift...How much to give?

Engagement Gift...How much to give?

We have FH's cousin's engagement party coming up on 9/20 and we're not sure how much to give. We did not have an engagement party and nobody I or FH knows has had one until now.

FH's aunt, the groom's mother is hosting the party in her back yard. She did give us an engagement gift of $50. Should we in turn give her son the same amount or should we give more? What's appropriate? We're on a tight budget now because we have our wedding coming up...but I don't want us to look cheap either.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

TIA

since it's a house party i think a 'safe' amount is $100, i only think of doubling his moms bc it's tied to a party..

I have only been to one engagement party. Before that I had never heard of them. I also grew up oot. But anyway, we bought them a margarita set. It was summer and it was an outdoor bbq. So we thought it would eb a cute gift. If you cant afford to give them money, maybe buy them something nice and useful.

Most engagement parties I give $200 - but since its at a house I think $100 is safe.

I wish we could give them a gift....but Fh's family would prob. frown down on it. Also, I asked FH's aunt if they were registered anywhere and she basically told me they weren't looking to recieve actual gifts..that they were saving that fo the bridal shower.

I think $75 is a good amount to give.

Just remember, you are also going to be giving a gift at the bridal shower and then at the wedding. I wouldn't go overboard on the engagement gift.

JMO, I don't like engagement parties. How many gifts can you give to one couple? It is just another way of getting another gift. FBIL had an engagement party I think 2 years ago, that was in the backyard. We made chocolate favors for them. It was a lot of work and not cheap. We paid for ribbons that were personalized. I think a $50 gift is sufficient, since presumably you will be getting them a shower and wedding gift as well as the fact that you are saving for your wedding.

I agree...we didn't have one because we've never been to one and also thought an engagement party within 11 months of our wedding was overboard not to mention a pain in the a$$.

I think $100 is fine!

Re: Engagement Gift...How much to give?

I'm probably a cheapo when it comes to these things, but I'd only give $50. I'm not a big fan of engagement parties. It's so true what others said - you have the shower and then the actual wedding where you'll need to give gifts. I also think because it's in the backyard, $50 is fine. I'm sure they're spending money to throw it, but they're not spending the huge amounts you'd spend if you rent a place, get a DJ, etc. So I would think the $50 from both of you would cover yourself and FH for the backyard party.

Also, I can't help but feel in your situation that they're purposely throwing this engagement party just to get money for the wedding (a few couples I know have done that). The fact that you asked the aunt where they're registered so you could get a gift (which seems like the most logical thing for an engagement party), but she's saying how they're saving the registry for the shower - I think it's because they want people to give money at the e-party. That would make me mad and make me want to give less. Haha.

Re: Engagement Gift...How much to give?

i'm having this issue too-i did not have an engagement party..needless to say we did not recieve any engagement gifts. I'm planning on buying them a gift of either a nice platter, or crystal dish. Something nice that they can use in their new home/apartment. I just hate giving money unless it's the actual wedding.
