Engagement Gift...How much to give?? XPOST from 08

We have FH's cousin's engagement party coming up on 9/20 and we're not sure how much to give. We did not have an engagement party and nobody I or FH knows has had one until now.

FH's aunt, the groom's mother is hosting the party in her back yard. She did give us an engagement gift of $50. Should we in turn give her son the same amount or should we give more? What's appropriate? We're on a tight budget now because we have our wedding coming up...but I don't want us to look cheap either.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

i would say 75 bc they are throwing a party. we just went to one and gave 100

I, too, attended an engagement party this summer while in the midst of saving for my own wedding. I gave $50. Some people give gifts, some don't. I'd rather be remembered for being thoughtful than cheap. Looking back, I could've just given a small token gift - a $15 bottle of wine, a $25 gift card for Friday's - something a little less that what I did give, and I would've been fine with that. We're having an e-party tomorrow - purpose being so our families can meet. I told guests who asked, NO GIFTS, but I'm sure they'll bring anyway. HTH!

Back when we had an engagement party (the first time we were engaged ) most of our friends gave $100 per couple (the closer ones gave more) but we also got a nice basket from a friend, which was also very thoughtful

I think 100 is good. Or maybe you can get them a nice gift such as their wedding china?

I just had an engagement party 2 weeks ago. I wasn't planning on having an EP. I am first daughter (of three) to get married so my mom is super excited- perhaps too excited at times, but it always could be worse! We had the party in my backyard at home in NY (I now live in Texas). It was so nice- brian's family came (from Pittsburgh)-anyway i digress

We didn't expect gifts- my mom kinda made us (she does the Mom guilt very well :) register for a few things (my relatives were bugging her)- so we got quite a few things off our registry (we didn't put a lot of stuff). Some people gave money (~50-100) and a few GCs for BBB and macys. I was just happy to celebrate with my family and friends.

I think my favorite gift was this amazing antique dish from one of my Aunts. Its beautiful!

Thank you ladies

I wish we could give them a gift or even a gift card....but Fh's family would prob. frown down on it. Also, I asked FH's aunt if they were registered anywhere and she basically told me they weren't looking to recieve actual gifts, only cash gifts...that they were saving registering for actual gifts for the bridal shower.
