So, my Mom wants to throw FH and I a party in the summer, but she doesn't want it to be an Engagement Party. Its to celebrate our engagement, but its also to let everyone from here meet FH and FSD since they have been in Ohio for the entirety of our relationship and very few people beyond my immediate family have met him. So its more of a 'Come and meet my Future Son in Law and my new Granddaughter' party...but...you can't put that on an invitation LOL
So...what would you call this?? She also doesn't want it to be fancy...it'll probably be in her backyard w/Ben's BBQ or something...how do we reflect the extreme casualty of the situation? Also we don't want people to feel like they HAVE to bring a gift (we won't be registering) but I don't want to put 'No gifts' on the invitation either.
Can anyone help?? Its all convoluted haha

Re: Engagement-ish Party
This is a toughy but maybe she can send out invites like if it was for a regular BBQ so people won't bring any gifts and just come very casual like for the meet and greet. Maybe she can even make an invite that is kind of light hearted and fun and says something like ' Meet my Future Son in law and my grandchild. Just shooting some ideas for you

Re: Engagement-ish Party
My FMIL is throwing a backyard BBQ for us, in lieu of an e-party which we did not want. We aren't sending out invites, because it is really going to be that casual and I can't be bothered lol. We are just going to spread the news by word of mouth. Doing that will emphasize the casual nature of it and hopefully people don't feel pressured to bring gifts. Maybe it can be called an Engagement Celebration lol.

Re: Engagement-ish Party
Why not just write 'Come join us in celebrating the engagement of....' on the invite. Then its just like a 'celebration' party.

Re: Engagement-ish Party
maybe something like:
Come and Meet the 'NEW' Family. That way the emphasis is more on getting together and meeting eachother rather than celebrating the engagement.

Re: Engagement-ish Party
How about calling people to invite them that way it can be fully explained what exactly this party is?

Re: Engagement-ish Party
A BBQ itself shows that the party is casual.
As far as gifts..even if you don't want people to feel they have to bring you a gift, I'm sure most will anyway. Most people who were brought up the right way know not to show up somewhere empty-handed.

Yeah, I know...since if I got an invite that said that I'd still bring something anyway lol.
I just don't want people to feel like they HAVE to give gifts...I don't want to look greedy lol
