Engagement Parties...

Engagement Parties...

We're thinking of not having an engagement party because we feel that people coming to our wedding is enough...does anyone else feel that way? Should we have one anyways? Maybe a party with no gifts kind-of-a-thing?

I agree with you. I think it's too much. We didn't have an engagement party.

We did not have an engagement party.

We got enaged in December and with the holidays it just didn't seem to make sense.

I agree, it was too much and our close friends and family gave us gifts anyway!!

I agree. We didn't have one either. A family party to celebrate your engagment is a nice idea, but it's gotten so out of control. I think people get financially drained between e-parties, showers, etc. It's too much.

We did not have one either. We felt it was just too much. FMIL had a family BBQ to celebrate and everyone was told 'NO GIFTS ALLOWED'. I felt that was nice enough.

I agree. We didnt have one because I felt like it was too much to ask of our guests. First an engagment party, then a shower, then the wedding thats 3 gifts in 11 months! So we decided not to have it! We had a get together with just our parents and then we had a get together with our parents, siblings, neices/nephews etc. but that was it!

ETA: you could say 'your presence is presents enough!'

the only reason why we are doing one is for the presents

we would like the family to meet each other before hand. not that it's an excuse to have an e-party..it fits the ocasion

Re: Engagement Parties...

Here's my dilemma any advice is appreciated. FI and I do not like the idea of an engagement party. However, we both are very close to our families and they have never met each other. My mother really wants to throw this party so we agreed as long as it was just two families getting to know each other and not a give us presents kinda thing. I have been challenged with getting invitations for this party. I have the blank invitations all read to go but have no idea what to put on them...

We had an E party...a backyard gig with good food and friends - we had a bad summer & my dad was going in for surgery 2 days after party so it was great for everyone to meet and wish him well...I didn't care about the gifts - just wanted to see everyone and have a great day!!

Everyone is different - I made the invites and told all it was open house so people came for as little as an hour and left w/ out any pressure! It was fun!

Lori maybe you can word the invites as a 'Smith and Jones family meet and greet' kind of thing, instead of an e-party. If there is any doubt about the gift issue, maybe family members could let people know by word of mouth that it's not necessary. Some people will give you stuff no matter what.

I don't think it's necessary, but it is a nice way to get the two families together. We had a backyard e-party and my parents were willing to invite all of our friends, but FH and I decided o just have family and the bridal party, so people could really socialize and get to know each other. We didn't ask for gifts, we weren't even registered at the time (we still aren't), but many people will give them because they want to, not because they have to or because it's expected of them.

Thanks so simple but perfect. Can't believe I didn't think of it.

we're having an e-party...i think it is up to you if you want to have one. I think it is a nice way of celebrating your enagement with your families. It's a good way for both families to spend some time together.
Our party is going to be family and bridal party only. My family happens to be big so the party will not be small and my family was calling to send gifts also, so we figured a nice way of thanking them is to have a get-together.

If you want to do a party with no gifts, you can word the invite:

John and jane request your company at a dinner to celebrate their engagement. Your company is the only present required.
(something like that)

Re: Engagement Parties...

One of the major reasons we're thinking of not having an e-party is because my entire family lives in Seattle.....and fi feels it's not right. They've met eachother like 4 years ago so I guess that was our 'meet and greet'....
