Re: engagement party
I got engaged in Oct 2003 and plan on having an e-party in June of this year. The reason we waited so long is because we want to have it outdoors. We are having one so that our families and friends can all get together. Even though we have been together for 7 years we have so many friends and family members who don't live nearby who haven't met each other. I think its a good idea to have one but its not necessary.

Re: engagement party
Hi, and welcome to the boards!! I was wondering where all the valentine's newbies where. Usually either side of parents offer to throw a party. Depending on how much money you have saved up for your wedding, you can either splurge and have a party or skip and save up for the wedding. We are paying for most of the wedding and no one has offered to throw us a party, so we are forgoing it to save up for the big day!! Good luck planning!!

I didnt have one. My mom doesnt believe in them, and I personally think it is too much. I think a bridal shower is enough

Re: engagement party
I got engaged in Nov. 2002 and we planned one for Feb. 2003, because we didn't want it too close to the Wedding or a Bridal Shower.
It was simple, it was in something similar to a Knights of Columbus hall. We catered food in, decorated (I didn't picked my colors yet, so we used these Engagement balloons for the centerpieces and used the colors in that balloon - red and silver) and got a DJ.

Re: engagement party
How about a picnic or bbq when the weather gets nice? Not too costly and it will be very casual.

we are having a small engagement party ... less then 1000 ... 50 guest @ a small resturant. it's a chance for both family to get to know each other instead of having 1 family on one side and vice versa

Re: engagement party
Congrats on your engagement!!!!
I really didn't want an e-party, but it was very important to our families to have one...so we just did a BBQ in our backyard...very informal and I actually had fun!!!!!
Good luck with all the planning!!!!!!

Re: engagement party
I'm going through the same thing as you. Been engaged since the end of Jan and want to have an engagement party to celebrate and have the families meet but don;t want guests to bring gifts and feel like its for money or anything, so we are either planning a cheap VFW, knights of colubus hall one within 2 months or my MOH said we could use her backyard in may. Its up to the both of you really. I was one of those that said I would NEVER have one, but then I got engaged a lot of nevers turned into WHEN's! lol...I would talk it over with your FI ( congratulations by the way) Did you think of a date yet?

Re: engagement party
one more thing...what starts out small..GROWS...we wanted just the family to come, and then when we started a guest it, it became, well this friend should come, and that person will feel insulted..kinda wishing I hadn't decided to go for the e-party sometimes...
I think you should go for it, you have the right to celebrate with family/friends, I had a girl-friend specifically ask people not to give her gifts because she didn't want to 'ask to much of them' just wanted to celebrate their happiness. you could do that, she still had people bring things. some did and some didn't. either way if you want it do it, you only get one chance at this.

Re: engagement party
We just got engaged recently too, on 12/27... just bought a house, and I'm graduating in May, so we're going to combine everything and have a reallly small, casual party in May as a engagement/housewarming/graduation thing, in the backyard of the house... for myself it really works out nice because the wedding is on LI, but my FI and I live in Philadelphia... that way, we can invite a lot of people from work/school in philly to the e-party that we won't be inviting to the wedding, so they can still be a part of the celebration...

Re: engagement party
I was engaged on 2/14 also. We are having an engagement party on May 16. We are moving to Florida so I don't think there will be a bridal shower too. I think having both is overkill and can be kinda rough $$ on the guests.

i agree i didnt have an e-party and got half my registtry i got engaged july 23, 2003 and getting married april 30, 2005 there is a gap but i feel that people do enough for the shower and wedding and they should have to feel that they have to give you 3 gifts-JMO
