Engagement Party?

Engagement Party?

I need helping deciding what to do for our engagement party. We looked at a hall today and got a great price, but I don't know if we should maybe just have it in a restaurant. What do you girls think? I really need help with this.

We chose to have a small gathering at my parent's house because we didn't want people to feel obligated to give us any presents. I'm all for the restaurant though. The hall will be good if you want a huge e-party, though.

It all depends on what type of e party you want, if you wnat someing more casual then I would go with the restaurant.

We are having a sat afternoon party at Stresa (on northern Blvd in Manhasset).
They are opening up just for us. We are having about 50 or so people. Cocktail hour, then a 4 course sit down lunch. We were going to do it at Panama Hatties but LONG STORY (FM me if you need to know) and went with Stresa. It was actually more money but I think it will be nicer in the long run.
Actually a restaurant does not have to be more casual than a catering hall. That totally depends on what restaurant you are having it at.

We are having our engagement party on my sister's deck, we are getting a white tent and a dj, lots of candles and flowers and basically having a big ol' house party!

Thanks for the feedback. We are going to go look at a restaurant today. If we have it at the hall, it would be like a mini wedding and I just don't think we can afford it. Hopefully the restaurant gives us a good price.

What restaurants are you looking at? Some will throw in a free champagne toast. If there is a restaurant that you like that does not have a private room discuss if they will close the restaurant for lunch or open the restaurant just for you for an afternoon. I think it can be a more initimate atmosphere.

We looked at Cirella's in Melville today. The restaurant is small, can hold about 80 people, so the whole place would be ours. They have music and we can bring in our music. We also have the decision on doing a buffet or sit down. Did any of you girls have an e-party?

I'M HAVING MY ENGAGEMENT PARTY IN APRIL AT MY HOME, I FEEL ITS BETTER THAT WAY BECAUSE U SAVE MONEY FOR THE WEDDING AND OTHER THINGS NEEDED FOR IT. I ALSO JUST INVITED FAMILY AND A FEW CLOSE FRIENDS BECAUSE THE MORE U INVITE TO THE ENGAGEMENT PARTY, THE LESS MONEY AND GIFTS U WILL RECIEVE AT THE WEDDING....SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT!

Re: Engagement Party?

Seems that everyone in my family has a different opinion on what do. Some think we shouldn't have one, others think we need to have it in a hall, others think the restaurant is good but some think that it is not. I just don't know. Is it wrong to have one, because that is how everyone is making me feel?

Re: Engagement Party?

I have to tell you it was only when I came on these boards did I hear for the first time that people were NOT having engagement parties. In fact many of my friends had more than one if their families came from different states.
It is also the first time I had heard anyone say that they thought they were for handouts. Everyone I know has had e-parties b/c they want their family to meet their FH's family and vise versa.
I think e-parties are a celebration of two people deciding to come together. If you are concerned have something less formal. I do not think you need to go all out and have a mini wedding (unless you want one). I have been to wonderful parties where they were simple cocktail parties in someone's house. If you want a party and you or your family wants to give you one then by all means have it!

Re: Engagement Party?

We finally came to a decision- we are not going to have an e-party. We decided that it would be better, and less expensive for my immediate family and his to go out for dinner. It is just better this way and it makes everyone happy.
