Engagement Party???

Engagement Party???

Hi Ladies!

I'm at a point where I want to have a 'formal' engagement party this summer. (Formal = where I send out invites, etc.). Last summer, after I got engaged, my parents planned an 'engagement party' around an existing block party. There was barely any time to invite all of my friends and my FH's family. Basically, the people that were there were going to be there anyway. Granted, I appreciate the gesture, because I didn't expect my parents to do that, but I want to give one where both families can be invited and have some fun together. What do you all think? Am I being too shallow and should just stop while I'm ahead? Or is there some justification here??? So confused

Thanks!!

BTW: be as harsh as you want...sometimes, I need the reality check!

I think it depends..did you recieve gifts b/c if you did people may wonder why they are getting another invite to an engagment party. Did people get calls saying you were having this engagment party and just not show up?

If you did get gifts maybe have something a bit low key (with invities). Something like a bbq

I totally agree with Im Getting Married. It depends if you got gifts and if you guest knew they were going to an 'engagement' party. If you received gifts and your parents invited them to an 'engagement' party then I would say dont have another one or have something informal just so the 2 families can mingle.

yup i agree with the girls... if gifts were given, you dont want ppl to feel that they have to give you another gift

also will it hurt your moms feelings?? like the e-party she had for you wasnt good enough??

be careful!!!

Re: Engagement Party???

It's a weird situation. The party wasn't planned to be an engagement party...it was a last minute thing since my family was going to be there anyway. Gifts were given by two or three people...

I LOVE the idea of a BBQ. Since my FH and I moved into our first home this past sept., we thought it would be a great idea to have a BBQ engagement party, where our guests are to bring themselves and nothing else.

I am by no means a greedy person...I'd rather give than receive. And I totally appreciate the gesture that my parents did for me. In fact, it was great!!! I just want to include my FH's family and friends that weren't able to make the one from June.

You ladies gave me great insight and I have to make sure that if I have another engagement party, that I specify that gifts are not allowed (or required, not sure of the wording...)

Thanks sooooooo much!!!

Maybe you can call it a getting to know you type party

I dunno..I feel that if you were only given gifts by a few people then why not have a formal party as you said? Especially if only your family was there not friends or any of FH's family. You deseve to have a real party, I'm not trying to take away from what the party was last year but I totally understand where you are coming from.

I think that if you received gits or money and people were under the assumption they were celebrating an engagement I would scatch the idea. I had my engagement party on the fourth of july and it was a engagement/graduation party. I had just graduated and having a duo party just made sense. I wouldnt throw another engagement party. Maybe closer to the wedding throw a small intimate bbq for both families to get to know one another.
