Ok, I got engaged July 4 2012 and I want to have an engagement party July 4 2013... it that okay? Our wedding date is set for March 28,2015.
I am finishing my BA in DC while my FH is working in Michigan and it would be the perfect time for us to get together with work & school schedules.
Do we NEED to be registered? I feel like its too far away from the wedding to be registered. not to mention I don't know when I'd be able to get together with my fiance between now and then and go registering for places.
Thoughts?!

I think its fine! Its a special date and works well for you, so go for it. And there's still plenty enough time between the e-party and wedding that your guests won't feel like everything is right on top of each other.
As far as registering, its up to you. FH and I didn't register before our e-party, and no one seemed to mind. If you really want to have something, though, you can always set up an online registry at BB&B or Amazon or something with some basics, and add to it as it gets closer to your bridal shower.

I agree! It's a great date! I didn't register before mine, but a lot of girls on here registered before theirs and it worked out well for them. Most people gave cash if they wanted to give a gift. Maybe do a small registry with just a few items for your engagement party.

I think it's fine as well. It's not like you're getting married a few months after the e-party. We just got engaged in September and our engagement party is March 23..getting married Nov 14 2014. You don't need to be registered, we only did it so we can get stuff from our immediate families for the holidays. We prefer cash gifts for our party since it's costing a pretty penny.

I believe proper etiquette says 2-6 months after engagement is when an engagement party is to be thrown. With that said, personally I feel like a year later is a long time, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't attend someone's party that planned it that way. Just for me personally, I wanted our engagement party while the engagement was still 'new.' Our party was 3 months to the day of our engagement. I would have done it sooner but the holidays would have made it too much. We did not register & received cash gifts. HTH!

I'm of the mindset that an enagement party is meant to celebrate the engagement as soon as possible after. I agree with Soon2BeMrsMango that it should be within 2-6 months but also I would still be just as happy to attend even if it was a year away. We didn't register anywhere and got lots of Bed Bath & Beyond gift cards and cash, which was what we would have wanted.

we got engaged in sept 2011 eng party april 2012 wedding sept 2013
we're looking to have our engagement party in June. We got engaged in December. We don't plan on registering because we really don't need anything. I don't even care about the gifts for the engagement party. Does that make me weird? I'm excited for it because it will be the whole family and the whole bridal party together for the first time!

We got engaged May 2012. We are not having an engagement party till this summer. So I think your fine. I don't go by all the 'rules' or 'etiquitee'. You have to do what works best for you.

I agree that you have to do what works best for you. Everyone has a different take on this, but I know with my family that there are a lot of special occasions coming up over the summer - so we are probably going to plan on having our engagement party sometime in March or early April. We got engaged on 12/22/12, so I think that's going to be fine Again, you have to do what works for you - good luck!

Oh yeah, and we don't plan on registering for our engagement party either. Our wedding date is so far in advance that I feel it's just to early now to start a registry. People generally give monetary gifts or gift cards at parties like this anyway, so I think you are fine

I agree with it being too early for a registry for a Dec. 2014 wedding. I have a friend who registered for just her fine china as soon as she had got engaged in case people wanted to give her an engagement gift.
All I could think was 'I dont even want fine china' LOL

no way. do a registry. we got so much off of it already. people also gave us gift cards for the stores, which will be great later. people were asking where we were registered before our e party and that was 17 months before our wedding! i think we registered in february 2012 (wedding in sept 2013)
