Engagement Party Dilema...complicated

My FMIL wants to throw us an engagement party soon.

The problem is my parents got divorced about a year ago, and my dad is getting re-married in early august. I'm not to happy about this but I live with it.

I want it not to be awkward for everyone especially me and FH. My dad's family is close with my mom and I don't want them to be feel awkward either. My mom has never met my dad's fiance...she didn't know he had a girlfriend/or was getting re-married until a few months ago.

I know that I will be upset and won't be able to enjoy the day, if I know my mom is miserable. And alchohol is not always the answer.

How do I go about this? Do we just skip having an engagement party or do I have a talk with my mom and dad seperately (my dad is really thickheaded and selfish so he probably won't get why I'm talking to him about this)

You know your parents best but I would speak to each of them and gage how ackward it would be for your mom (mostly). Most adults can be civil for an evening for their child's sake.

I would just make sure to not have them sit together.

ITA! I think that you need to see how your mom feels about it. I'm sure that she wants to celebrate your engagement and knows it's important to you so it's best to see how she feels about the situation.

ITA.....I would give it a try and talk to both parents separately..but both of your parents should be able to put aside the issues for one night for their child, so you can be happy and have your party
