Engagement Party--Do you have to have one???

Ok, So im in a bit of a dilemma...My wedding is pretty expensive and my parents are paying for half and my fiance and i r paying the other half (his dad lost his job). The thing is...his parnets wants to throw an engagement party for us but my family and i somewhat think that whatever money they could contribute should go to the wedding and not to an engagement party. The other problem is..how do i let people know that i am registered..can i put that info on an engagement announcement? Please Please Respond

As far as letting people know that you're registered, I think you kind of get that out through word of mouth.

As for having an engagement party, there is no rule that you have to have one. Maybe talk the money issues over with your parents and see what they think. You could always do something casual like a BBQ or something.

Whoops sorry I wrote that wrong... maybe FH could talk the money issue over with his parents and see if they would rather contribute to the wedding or something.

I never had one, its not a big deal to me. I do agree with your parents, it is very expensive and every penny you can save matters.

I'm not having an engagement party. I told our parents and my bridesmaids where we were registered and they can spread it via word of mouth.

Also when the bridal shower invites go out my bridesmaids can put the cards in that envelope.

One last thing, I created a wedding website through this site and listed them on there with tons of other wedding information. I then put 'for more information see our website at .....' on our save the dates.

Hope one of these ideas may help you

I'm not having an engagement party for the same reason, I would prefer all the money go to the wedding. And if you do have one, you have place registry cards in with your invitations, so your guests know where you're registered. You can get the cards from where you register, Macy's gives you a lot.

I don't want to have one either. My FIL's wanted to throw us one, and I too would rather them put that money towards something for our wedding rather than a party. As for your registry, that can be passed along by word of mouth. Also, if you ever create a wedding website you can put all the information up. I think that would be a great way to announce your engagement, as well as making the information about your registry available.

We didn't have one either. We were both on our own for a while and we also had a 7 month-long engagement...it seemed like too much to ask friends and family to give an engagement gift and a wedding gift within 6 mos of each other. My sisters threw me a bridal shower and I was very happy!

A couple of things. I had a similar dilemma initially. Have your FH talk to his parents when you're not around. Have him tell them that you guys need whatever help you can get and would be willing to forgo an engagement party and just take the help in the wedding. That's what we did. We also didn't have one b/c of time constraints and how his parents wanted to give us a party (long story). As for the registry, you do that with a wedding website. You should never put it on an invite. It's tacky. HOWEVER, you can have your MOH & mom spread the word of where you're registered. You can also put on your STDs to please visit your wedding website and post where you're registered on your website. Most sites already have a section set up for registries already. HTH! And please FM me if you have any more questions.

were having a party next month-i think that how long you're engaged can also play a role in whether or not you have a party-our e-party is still over a year before our wedding

as for the cost..if you plan it you can get away with having one for not a ton of money..i think ours will cost around 1200 for about 45 people..and were having it at a place

we had one...i originally just wanted something small in the backyard but it turned into quite the production. if you do have one, i don't think its right to write where you are registered, people shouldn't feel obligated to bring a gift.

I didnt have a e-party for few reasons. 1. I didnt have the money to spend on one and 2. I felt like it is a lot to ask you guest to buy you another gift. If they come to the eparty the shower and the wedding thats 3 gifts and travel expenses etc. That is a lot to ask of guests in my opinion.

Well my in law's threw us our e-party. At first I thought the same as you (maybe the $$ would be better just put towards the wedding) however, his parents wanted to host something for us, since my parents were hosting the wedding. I never asked for them to put the $$ towards the wedding ( I felt it was rude) but I realzied that it was important to them to give us a party, which was very generous of them.
